Reviews: Z Special Unit (1)
“An interesting subject ruined by stodgy writing. Very well made.”
(Hardback)
These people did some really interesting things, caused lots of bother to the Japanese, and did so with very few resources and even fewer losses. Indigenous tribes vastly preferred us to the Japanese (note that all wokey types) and didn’t take much persuading to help and join in, with their local knowledge and hunting skills invaluable assets.
It is also very well made with top-quality paper in a chunky hardback cover. Beware the gruesome descriptions of Japanese torture and war crimes. Mind you, the indigenous tribes did some awful things back.
So what’s the problem ?
The author’s "Four Weetabix and no milk" stodgy style of writing: he has no idea how to convey drama, nor how to wedge all his facts in. There are too many sub-clauses, sentences with facts that disrupt the flow (I’m assuming the author prefers facts to flow because he’s found the fact, wants to show off his research skills, and is jolly well going to use it).
This book needs sidebars for the facts the author has found without them disrupting the flow. Similarly, all the bits about contradictions in memoirs and between records and physical evidence need to be in a separate chapter. Some of us don’t care about a person being recorded as Sgt in one place and Corp in another.
I also can’t help that the naff title doesn’t help: I can imagine eye-rolling and smirking at a particular type of rotund older gentleman being interested in ‘special ops’ with the inevitable Z or X designation.
It’s also a really weird size that is strangely difficult to hold.
