Will I have to pay GST or VAT on orders being sent to my address outside of the UK?
We expect tax to start being charged for countries in the EU from the 2 April 2024. As a customer you will start to be charged at the checkout from May 2024 for EU deliveries, based on the country where your order is shipped to.
For all other countries including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand and some US States these will also start to have taxes levied from May 2024, with the tax charged varying by country, state (USA) or province (Canada).
Please check your local tax rules for importation of goods, as you will be liable for any additional tax charges where these apply to high value orders, for example single deliveries above AUD1,000 in Australia or higher than €150 in the EU.
You will find more details on tax on International deliveries here.
Will the ongoing trade war/cross border tariffs impact my order?
For customers living outside the UK, it is possible further charges may be applied to your order before delivery or collection. These would be in addition to any local tax you may have paid as part of your purchase and will depend upon the origin of the book.
It is with regret these charges our completely out of our control.
As the fast-moving situation develops and more information becomes available, we will continue to update this page accordingly.

We accept both Love2Shop and One4All gift cards.
You don't need to use the whole balance in one go. The balance of the card is only take at the time of the order being dispatched. You cannot part pay with Love2Shop or One4All gift cards and a debit or credit card. You can combine them with a Waterstones UK Gift card/eGift, National Book Token or Plus balance.
What is the £1.02 charge on my Apple Pay account?
When paying by Apple Pay we need to take a pre-authorisation payment to allow us to take a deferred payment as we only take payment when we despatch the order. For this we place a request for £1.02 and then reverse this.
What is the £1.03 charge on my Google Pay account?
When paying by Apple Pay we need to take a pre-authorisation payment to allow us to take a deferred payment as we only take payment when we despatch the order. For this we place a request for £1.03 and then reverse this.
I am having problems with my payment card at checkout. Can you help?
We upgraded our payment process to a more reliable service with increased security measures. One unintended consequence is that our payment form is no longer compatible on older web browsers (significantly Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which has now been superseded by Microsoft Edge).
In the event of payment issues at checkout, we recommend trying an alternative browser (i.e. Edge, Chrome or Firefox), or ensuring your current browser is kept up to date by completing the following:
Update Google Chrome: click on , then 'Settings', then 'About Chrome'
Update Safari: click on , then 'App Store', then 'Updates'
Update Firefox: Click on , then 'Help, then 'About Firefox'
Upgrade Internet Explorer: For Windows 10, we recommend upgrading to Microsoft Edge by visiting www.microsoft.com/edge.
Online Pricing
Our shops select and price books for sale independently.
Our online book prices apply to books purchased on Hatchards.co.uk for delivery or Click and Collect.
All charges are in UK pounds (£). All overseas orders will be charged in their respective currencies, based on current exchange rates.
Prices displayed in your shopping basket are the current prices of the goods and the amount you will be charged for each item when submitting your order.
Prices are subject to change without notice.
What are your rules around promotional offers?
- Prices exclude postage and packing
- Promotions apply to listed titles only, which are subject to change and availability
- We reserve the right to withdraw a promotion at any time
- On 3 for 2 promotions (and other multi-buy offers), the lowest priced title will always be the 'free' item If you choose to purchase a product from a multi-buy offer, but do not purchase enough products to qualify for the special discount, the product will be charged at the normal price.
What is your pre-order price promise?
- Payment for your pre-order is only taken on the day of dispatch. If the price happens to be lower on that day than you initially paid, you’ll be debited the lower of the two
- This only applies up until the publication date and any further price reductions can not be applied retrospectively.
What are your VAT rates?
Items that are subject to VAT have the 20% rate reflected in their RRP. Books are not subject to VAT, however for items where partial or full 20% needs to be applied the VAT is included in the selling prices reflected on our website.
Full VAT items include;
- DVDs
- Games
- Other non-book products
- The prices payable for goods are as set out in the website, inclusive of VAT where applicable (books are currently zero rated).
Customers ordering for delivery outside of the UK will be responsible for payment of any local taxes payable including VAT, and will be required to pay extra for delivery and clearance where necessary.
