Delivery Information

Latest UK Delivery Estimates

  • Free delivery over £25 - 3-5 working days
  • 2nd Class (£2.99) - 3-5 working days

  • Free Delivery to a Hatchards Bookshop - Currently Unavailable
  • Your items will be available to collect from your local Hatchards shop within 2 hours if in stock there, or within 1-3 weeks if not.

Please note that:

  • The shop will email you when your item is available for collection.
  • Your order will be held at the shop for 90 days for you to pick up at your convenience.
  • You should take your dispatch email or order number and a form of ID with you when you go to collect your goods - we require these as a proof of purchase, and without them we cannot release your order.

Overseas Delivery

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. For more details, please consult the latest information provided by Royal Mail's International Incident Bulletin.

Please note that:

  • Only books are available to be sent outside of the UK.
  • If one or more items are not available when you place your order there may be a delay in dispatch, so that we can send your items in as few parcels as possible.
  • Orders will be dispatched using international post and you will be charged a shipping cost.
  • This method is fully secure, and we can track and trace the shipment for you.
  • Orders sent via this method will require a signature upon receipt.
  • Courier delivery cannot be made to PO Boxes.

The prices payable for goods are as set out in the website, inclusive of VAT where applicable (books are currently zero rated). Customers ordering for delivery outside of the UK will be responsible for payment of any local taxes payable including VAT, and will be required to pay extra for delivery and clearance where necessary.

Customs Charges

If you are ordering goods for delivery outside of the UK, please note that your consignment may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once the goods reach the country of destination. Any such charges levied in relation to customs clearance must be paid by you. It is accepted by you that Hatchards has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Hatchards recommend that you check with your local customs officials or post office for more information regarding importation taxes/duties that may be applicable to your online order. You will be the importer of record and responsible for any import VAT and duty that needs to be paid. In addition, any charges for import clearance will be paid by you, the customer.

For BFPO addresses, please select UK as your country.

Prison Book Delivery

For prison deliveries, when selecting a delivery address please enter the Prisoner Number into the 'Address line 1' field and the name of the prison into the 'Address line 2' field. Enter the name and other details as normal.

Please note that there are books that are banned from being sent to prisons. This varies from institution to institution, so please contact the relevant prison if you have any questions.

Returning Items

Our extended returns policy is for a 60 day period. However, whilst our shops are temporarily closed due to government guidance, customers can return items up to 35 days after their local shop reopens, provided they are returned in pristine condition. We will keep our website updated should there be any further developments. If you have ordered through our website or app, you can return your order to us using the free returns service or freepost address, as below. In the case of exchanges, assuming the product is in good condition and currently stocked, we will credit against another purchase irrespective of the date of purchase. Free UK Returns

You can return an item to any of our bookshops for a refund or exchange free of charge. Please simply bring the dispatch note which accompanied your order.

Free UK returns by post

Accompanying your order will be a dispatch note. Please follow the instructions written on this note to return your order free of charge. Alternatively, if you've lost your dispatch note our freepost returns address is below and you can print a copy of the address to use as a label.

Our freepost returns address can only be used for orders placed on If you have made a purchase in one of our shops and you would like to return it, please speak to a bookseller in store. Be sure to mark the return reason using the codes supplied, and also mark whether you would like a refund or a return. For the return of high-value goods, we recommend that you use a recorded delivery service, as we cannot be responsible for non-delivery of returned items.

Exchange and Refund Policy Terms and Conditions

Hatchards is happy to exchange or refund your items on presentation of a valid receipt. This does not apply to electrical items or face masks, where refunds or exchanges will be given only if the seal is unbroken or the p roduct is faulty.Goods must be returned within 60 days of purchase or receipt (whichever is the later) and be in perfect condition in their original packaging. Your right to an exchange of faulty/damaged items has a return period greater than 60 days in accordance with your statutory rights. Perishable goods (including any food products and or goods which have an expiry date) will not be eligible for exchange or refund unless such goods are damaged, supplied incorrectly or sold not as described. We will refund to your original payment method. Hatchards gift cards are not refundable.
