Middle East Operational Update

Due to the current situation in the Middle East, export traffic to the destinations listed below are likely to be affected. Some shipments transit through impacted areas, and as a result, customers may experience delays.

At this time, we are continuing to accept all traffic; however, the situation remains highly fluid and may change at short notice.

We are maintaining close communication with the airlines and our destination partners and will provide further updates as soon as new information becomes available.

Please note that:

  • The shop will email you when your item is available for collection.
  • Your order will be held at the shop for 90 days for you to pick up at your convenience.
  • You should take your dispatch email or order number and a form of ID with you when you go to collect your goods - we require these as a proof of purchase, and without them we cannot release your order.

Overseas Delivery

We are happy to offer our products to international customers. Below are details that you will find useful when placing orders to be shipped outside of the UK.

We regret that at the current time we are unable to accept orders for delivery to China. This will not affect orders for delivery to Hong Kong.

Due to the ongoing tariff situation between China and the US, we are currently unable to send certain products to the US that have been printed or manufactured in China.

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. For more details, please consult the latest information provided by Royal Mail's International Incident Bulletin.

Please note that:

  • Only books are available to be sent outside of the UK.
  • There is a weight limit on international shipping which means some books will be ineligible for international delivery.
  • Items priced at £135+ are not available to purchase online for international delivery.
  • If one or more items are not available when you place your order there may be a delay in dispatch, so that we can send your items in as few parcels as possible.
  • Orders will be dispatched using international post and you will be charged a shipping cost.
  • The courier fee/shipping cost may be subject to tax.
  • This method is fully secure, and we can track and trace the shipment for you.
  • Orders sent via this method will require a signature upon receipt.
  • Courier delivery cannot be made to PO Boxes.

VAT

The prices payable for goods are as set out in the website, inclusive of VAT where applicable (books are currently zero rated). Customers ordering for delivery outside of the UK will be responsible for payment of any local taxes payable including VAT, and will be required to pay extra for delivery and clearance where necessary.

Tax on International Delivery

We expect tax to start being charged for countries in the EU from the 2 April 2024. As a customer you will start to be charged at the checkout from May 2024 for EU deliveries, based on the country where your order is shipped to.

For all other countries including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand and some US States these will also start to have taxes levied from May 2024, with the tax charged varying by country, state (USA) or province (Canada).

Please check your local tax rules for importation of goods, as you will be liable for any additional tax charges where these apply to high value orders, for example single deliveries above AUD1,000 in Australia or higher than €150 in the EU.

Customs Charges

If you are ordering goods for delivery outside of the UK, please note that your consignment may be subject to import duties and taxes, which are levied once the goods reach the country of destination. Any such charges levied in relation to customs clearance must be paid by you. It is accepted by you that Hatchards has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Hatchards recommend that you check with your local customs officials or post office for more information regarding importation taxes/duties that may be applicable to your online order. You will be the importer of record and responsible for any import VAT and duty that needs to be paid. In addition, any charges for import clearance will be paid by you, the customer.

Will the ongoing trade war/cross border tariffs impact my order?

For customers living outside the UK, it is possible further charges may be applied to your order before delivery or collection. These would be in addition to any local tax you may have paid as part of your purchase and will depend upon the origin of the book.

Prison Book Delivery

For prison deliveries, when selecting a delivery address please enter the Prisoner Number into the 'Address line 1' field and the name of the prison into the 'Address line 2' field. Enter the name and other details as normal.

Please note that there are books that are banned from being sent to prisons. This varies from institution to institution, so please contact the relevant prison if you have any questions.

Returning Items

Our extended returns policy is for a 30 day period. If you have ordered through our website or app, you can return your order to us using the free returns service or freepost address, as below. In the case of exchanges, assuming the product is in good condition and currently stocked, we will credit against another purchase irrespective of the date of purchase. If you have any questions regarding the returns process below please contact our Customer Support Team.

Free UK Returns

You can return an item to any of our bookshops for a refund or exchange free of charge. Please simply bring the dispatch note which accompanied your order.

Free UK returns by post

Accompanying your order will be a dispatch note. Please follow the instructions written on this note to return your order free of charge. Alternatively, if you've lost your dispatch note our freepost returns address is below and you can print a copy of the address to use as a label.

Our freepost returns address can only be used for orders placed on Hatchards.co.uk If you have made a purchase in one of our shops and you would like to return it, please speak to a bookseller in store. Be sure to mark the return reason using the codes supplied, and also mark whether you would like a refund or a return. For the return of high-value goods, we recommend that you use a recorded delivery service, as we cannot be responsible for non-delivery of returned items.

Exchange and Refund Policy Terms and Conditions

Hatchards is happy to exchange or refund your items on presentation of a valid receipt. This does not apply to electrical items or face masks, where refunds or exchanges will be given only if the seal is unbroken or the p roduct is faulty.Goods must be returned within 30 days of purchase or receipt (whichever is the later) and be in perfect condition in their original packaging. Your right to an exchange of faulty/damaged items has a return period greater than 30 days in accordance with your statutory rights. Perishable goods (including any food products and or goods which have an expiry date) will not be eligible for exchange or refund unless such goods are damaged, supplied incorrectly or sold not as described. We will refund to your original payment method. Hatchards gift cards are not refundable.
