But that idea went straight out the window after the first few chapters. I absolutely loved C. G. Drews YA books so I had high expectations and this DID NOT disappoint!!It’s chaotic, dark and deeply disturbing. I spent half the time holding my breath and the other half looking over my shoulder ?. The unreliable narrator had me questioning EVERYTHING. I don’t think a book has ever made me feel this stressed.. and I mean that as the biggest compliment.The house feels off right from the start:AliveWaiting Watching..Was it the house or the people??As an autistic person I related so much to Elodie’s experience of motherhood, especially with undiagnosed autism and postpartum depression. The doubt, the pressure and slowly losing yourself felt so painfully real. I actually got emotional at times, feeling seen in the messiness of it all. This book is hauntingly beautiful. C. G. Drews your writing is unhinged, deeply disturbing and completely addictive. You’re an instant buy for me and I’ll never stop screaming from the rooftops about how your books make me question my sanity, feel horrified and kicking my feet at the same time.GO READ IT NOW!!

Is this book a thriller? Is it about a mother’s love for her child? Is it about madness? If so, then whose? Or is it a horror story? By the end of the book, I would say all of these – but horror is what reverberates round your brain and doesn’t let go. Reading the book becomes an obsession – you and the characters are entwined together in a nightmare that can never end – at least not end well. Beautiful young mother, Elodie, only wants to be loved, to be needed. She has her perfect son, Jude. Then she meets the adorable Bren, who whisks her and Jude away from her miserable existence. He loves her unconditionally, gives her everything she wants. Wait, you say. Mr Perfect never is. There is always a psychopath or serial killer hiding just below the surface. But, the hiding is done SO well. Bren loves Elodie, but he also loves his house that he is renovating to be their perfect home. Jude can hear ‘things’ in the wall. He thinks that the renovations are wounding the house, and the house wants to harm him in return. He will not accept that old houses often make noises. The macabre imagery of blood, of rot, of decay becomes more and more pronounced. The walls bleed, cavernous holes open up to devour … Elodie and Bren both have their secrets – the question is, whose secret is the most damning, the most fatal? If you don’t succeed. 4.5/5 rounded up I’m already a big fan of CG Drew’s work so when I heard that they were writing their first adult novel, I knew I had to read it! Ohh boy! It did not disappoint! It’s a wild ride! Single mother Elodie believes she’s hit the jackpot when she marries Bren. He’s rich, handsome and completely doting. Elodie and her son, Jude, relocate from Australia to America to live with Bren in the house he is currently renovating. Jude doesn’t like the house, but that’s just normal kid behaviour right?! The tension is built slowly but in a way that feeds into your paranoia and anxiety. You really find yourself questioning what is going on with this house! This alongside the unravelling relationship between Elodie and Jude, it leaves you feeling wholly uncomfortable for days to come. I particularly liked how Elodie’s monologues have you initially relating to her and feeling for her, its so expertly written you start to question your own mentality before realising there’s more going on with Elodie than meets the eye. When you think it couldn’t get anymore unhinged, Drews give us more and more, all the way to the end! I adored this book and preordered the Owlcrate Edition before I’d even finished.
