Reviews: You Again? (10)
“Great fun!”
(Paperback)
by federica angele
Not my favourite Nick Spalding, but still a laugh out loud, hilarious book, with greatly thought out characters and an engaging story. I'm a sucker for a good present tense narrative, and Spalding's is definetly top notch. I found the dialogues, though great fun, a bit repetitive. All in all a very pleasant read, that I would certainly recommend, but also have a look at other titles by the same author, because I'm sure they won't disappoint. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.
“Very comical”
(Paperback)
by Judith Srivalsan
This reminded me of an episode of Frazier where Frazier and new girlfriend end up in a beach room next to his ex wife and new partner. The same happens to Joel and Amy - divorced for two years and hating each other. Set in the Maldives it’s an example of how paradise can be ruined!! There were a few bits that I laughed out loud at and it was generally a fun read! Thanks to netgalley for an advanced copy.
“Ending saves this book”
(Paperback)
by Susan Illis
At first Joel thinks he's mistaken when he catches a glimpse of his ex-wife, Amy, at the airport. But then he sees her and her new boyfriend, Ray, again. Surely it's a strange coincidence that they're traveling the same day Joel and his new girlfriend, Cara, are flying to the Maldives. But, no. Not only are they on the same flight, they're seated in the same row, and board the same speedboat to the secluded island resort. Perhaps it's not such a shocking coincidence; Joel and Amy had honeymooned at that very resort. Avoiding one another doesn't work, so Joel sees fit to display his massive insecurities by alternating competing with them and playing mean-spirited jokes on them. Unfortunately, the book is not as funny as it's meant to be. I failed to see any of Joel's redeeming qualities until the end of the book. His constant kvetching was annoying and the meanness bothered me. The book ended well, with Joel and Amy discovering the real cause of their marriage breaking down, so it did conclude on a positive note. And, of course, the setting was perfect. #YouAgain #NetGalley
“Holiday from hell”
(Paperback)
by Sarah Goldthorpe
I really enjoyed some of Nick Spalding’s previous novels but I just didn’t get into this in the same way. It’s a good premise with estranged divorced couple Joel and Amy both ending up on holiday at the same destination with their new partners and there’s plenty of humour in it however I just didn’t like the characters somehow. If you want an easygoing read it’s great and I think plenty will have no issue with the characters it’s just a personal thing.
“Character annoyed me”
(Paperback)
by Helen Wilkinson
Not the book for me. Understood the motivation of the characters but they annoyed me. Only read to half way through. Well written but i wanted to tell the characters to grow up and move on.
