Reviews: Wise Creatures (5)
“Masterful and haunting exploration of sisterhood and trauma.”
(Paperback)
I LOVED this! I have loved Sullivan's other books, and this is no exception. She is the expert in writing familial relationships (especially sisters) and her writing is always beautiful. This book in particular focuses on the trauma of two young girls and how they cope, both differently and together.
Overall, a beautiful and haunting exploration of how trauma affects people and the lengths we will go to to protect the ones we love.
Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me a proof copy for review!

“A beautiful view on trauma and family”
(Paperback)
I loved this book so much, I couldn't wait to get home just so I could continue reading it.
The writing is phenomenal, I found myself getting scared and creeped out because of how immersed I felt in the story. A beautiful portrait of how each member of a family be affected by trauma, and the way they try to cope with it. The sister/cousin relationship is very heartwarming and it ads a nice light touch to the dark undertones of the story.
I really recommend this book to anyone that likes a bit of horror and/or dark topics.
P.s Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me a proof copy! What a great book
“Amazingly spooky YA horror!”
(Paperback)
Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book!
I have not read something this spooky and scary in a long time. After Nina gets her heart broken by a guy at school, her house becomes the site of a haunting. With items flying about the house and strange red marks covering Nina, her sister Daisy believes that a mysterious They have come back to haunt her family and who knows what they want this time? They are the creatures that used to haunt Daisy when she was a small child, allowing her to see the futures of the people around her, a fact that her Mum exploited to it's fullest extent. When They start to hurt Daisy's sister and secrets are revealed how will Daisy protect the ones she loves?
This is the perfect novel to sink your teeth into this spooky season. It is hugely gripping and just the right amount of terrifying to keep you reading into the small hours. The atmosphere that Sullivan creates is so thick with tension and so unbelievably intriguing, I never wanted to leave this world. The way this book is written puts you on edge immediately and that never really goes away as you get further into the book, the tension builds and builds and never really drops off which is amazing. It takes so much skill to keep people on edge for that long.
I really loved the characters in this book. I loved the relationship between Daisy and Nina, cousins that were thrust together and became sisters. You get a real sense of camaraderie with them, they truly would do anything for each other even through all of the trauma. The relationship between Daisy and her Aunt is more complicated but they don't love each other any less than a mother and a daughter would and I think that is beautiful. In the end, even though everyone was terrified, you know that this little family would go to the ends of the earth for each other. Oz is another character that I really liked. I wasn't a fan of him at first but he really grew on me and I ended up feeling so bad for him, he was a very complex individual in the end and I think it's a real credit to the author that she can make a side character such a complex individual.
I loved that this book is set in Ireland and I loved all the Irish slang peppered throughout. I also loved the diversity of the characters.
The creepiest part of this book was definitely the mysterious They that Daisy blames the haunting on. And as you find out more about Daisy's past you definitely start to see why she, and everyone else, is so scared about what's happening in their home. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I cannot recommend this book enough.
“Suspenseful and spooky!”
(Paperback)
Told from the perspective of our main character Daisy, we follow two sisters as something about their house starts to feel not quite right. Daisy knows this feeling all too well - but this time the creatures are after Nina.
Wise creatures is a brilliant spooky read that's perfect for those colder months. As the story progressed I felt a real sense of tension and dread, and I just couldn't put the book down. If you enjoy a suspenseful read then definitely give this one a go!
