Reviews: Wings (2)
“Wings - the story of a band on the run”
(Hardback)
Paul McCartney has been busy rushing into print these last few years, and this third book details what he did after the Beatles break-up. He started again from scratch, forming a new group with wife Linda. The book shows how the group had major success and helped him come to terms with the demise of the Fab Four. It’s informative, witty and hard to put down. Contributions from all involved. A good time to re-evaluate Wings who made a lot of good music.
“Compelling and joyous storytelling through those who were there”
(Hardback)
I’ve always loved the joyous rock sound of Wings and this oral history was the perfect celebration of the band.
As editor, Ted Widmer has pulled together so much information to make this book incredibly engaging. I found myself racing through it and totally absorbed in the story unfolding. I loved the timeline and snapshots of the biggest-selling albums of each year, to bring context to what was happening around Wings at the time.
The voices and perspectives in here are fascinating for any Beatles/Wings/McCartney fan. It’s such a snapshot into Paul as an artist, a performer, a husband and a father.
My favourite aspect was reading about Paul and Linda’s relationship and their strength as a couple. At a time when McCartney could have gone off and done anything he wanted post-Beatles, he chose to do it with his family literally by his side. I love that they re-wrote the script for how rock tours could work and produced brilliant music in the process.
I can’t wait to see the accompanying documentary – based on the same archival material but created separately from the book. It will be fascinating to see this on screen and how the storytelling diverges from the book.
