Reviews: Wilding (23)
“Read this to find hope for a wild Future”
(Paperback)
Turns every other story of our shrinking, depleted wild lands on its head. There is a future for our wildlife. Not just a great story, but a potential real salvation.
“Brilliantly informative and well written”
(Paperback)
This is the best book I have read in the last 10 years, probably ever. So well written and informative, the achievements at Knepp are astounding especially given the objections in the early years and the lack of government support, absolutely amazing.
“Hope filled, inspiring read”
(Paperback)
Like many people I feel burdened by the woes of the world and desperately concerned about global warming. This is a well written account of how a farming family pushed back against the status quo, took a leap in the dark and have created a magical space for nature to literally bloom. This book filled my heart with hope, but it for everyone you know and spread some hope and possibility for the future
“A return to nature”
(Paperback)
Inspired by the thought of returning the " gently burbling" turtle dove to this part of England and prompted by mounting debt, a huge and brave decision was made in 2000 to completely change the Knepp estate from intensive farming and to sell all the herds and machinery. Isabella Tree and her husband Charlie Burrell are pioneers in "wilding" their part of West Sussex and this book describes how they embark on a process with all kinds of expert advice and help.
I loved the story of Ted Green the "oak expert" from Windsor Great Park and was amused by the antics of the Tamworth pigs. I was interested in the discussions on what constitutes native species and also how the post Ice Age vegetation may have changed.
There is opposition but gradually the wilding achieves successes with increased plant and insect species, reduced flooding and eventually the return of the turtle dove and the nightingale. It has not stopped there and this project continues to inspire. It is a very frank and fascinating account and certainly a story for our times.
“Wilding!!”
(Paperback)
I loved this book and would thoroughly recommend it! I wasn't sure how I'd feel reading it initially, however, Isabella Tree is a wonderfully engaging writer and I was hooked from the start! This is a book that NEEDS to be read by everyone as it will challenge your thinking and understanding of farming, nature and how we look after our environment and world.Give it a go. it will make you think!!
