Although the main story is contained well herein, for maximum enjoyment, specifically with regard to the main characters, their backstories and development, I do recommend you start from book one and read in order. So... we start with the mutilated body of a woman in her own home. It bears quite a resemblance to other murders from a few years back, the perpetrator of which has never been found. Enter DI Bishop to investigate. He immediately calls in Holly Wakefield, a criminal psychologist as it's obvious her talents could well assist. On investigating the murders, they now link them, they puzzle over the drawings that have been left at each scene. What is the significance? What have others missed in their investigations that Holly could now find? What indeed... and with the net closing in on the killer, will they catch them before they find themselves as targets? I loved Holly's first two outings and I loved this one just as much. It hit the ground running, sucked me in for the duration, and spat me out at the end, exhausted but satisfied. I love Holly as a character, especially her interaction with Bishop, both personal and professional. Holly is somewhat distracted in this book as she has some personal stuff to come to grips with which also concerns her brother. But she manages to close the door on all that enough to assist the police. Bishop has his own demons which also threaten to derail him but, by the end of the book, it looks like he will be more on an even keel come the next outing. Pacing is good, consistent with the narrative and ramps up nicely as we reach the conclusion. There is also no superfluous padding or waffle to be found, and the characters' personal stuff complements the case being investigates rather than overshadowing it. All in all, a cracking addition to a series which is shaping up nicely. Roll on next time.
