Reviews: Weirdo (18)
“Ever been anxious? Get ready to feel seen!”
(Hardback)
by Kristina at Manchester Deansgate
Reading this book felt like one long anxiety attack. Okay, maybe that's a tiny bit exaggerated, but I really can't say I had a good time reading it. Sophie is a chronic over-thinker who makes terrible decisions, and as a reader you are very much stuck in her head. And her head is not a happy place. So, dear reader, you have the choice to be annoyed with this fairly privileged woman, or to read with compassion, and to experience the excruciating discomfort of over-thinking. Overall, it's not a funny book, but there were moments where I literally laughed out loud (like the bit when Sophie is convinced her Yoga teacher had followed her home to tell her off for thinking too much during class). The writing style is very much stream of consciousness, which I don't love to read. But it really worked for this book. 'Weirdo' is not a stand-up comedy experience, but this is well worth a read! I had requested a proof of 'Weirdo' and was delighted when I received one.
“Took Me by Surprise”
(Hardback)
by Sarah C
Sophie is a weirdo. She’s struggling with debt, accumulated after she travelled to Australia to try and meet up with a work colleague she was infatuated with, and now she’s a bit lost. Her family dynamic is strange, and she just seems ever so slightly unhinged. Oh, and that co-worker from Australia has just reappeared at the bar she now works at. Action stations, please. I’m surprised by how much I liked this book - I think it’s such a strong testament to Pascoe’s writing style, which I found to be sharp and quippy, with a consistent level of humour throughout, even during its darker moments. It kept me engaged, and it truly felt like we were in Sophie’s mind as she wrangles with all her emotions and feelings. Some of the observations were so stark, the feelings so raw and real, I felt almost winded by them, just to go back to chuckling the next moment. She’s not always a reliable narrator - and she certainly takes questionable actions, but so do the people around her. It was maybe dialled up to eleven, but I actually found it quite representative of how some of us can be. No one is perfect and we all have our odd little experiences, relationships, and internal thoughts. I found it so readable, and it had me laughing out loud, while also almost bringing me to tears at times. Highly enjoyed. Thank you to the publishers, and Netgalley, for the copy to review!
“Weirdly Addictive”
(Hardback)
by Pamela Lilley
I don’t even know where to begin with this review. I don’t even think I liked the story to begin with. It took me a few chapters to understand Sophie, and once I realised where the story was going I was more comfortable with the a scenarios. It was all over the place - a place that is Sophie’s chaotic abstract mind. I have to be honest and say that my mind can be very similar, with thoughts going backwards and forwards in tangents. Sophie has some strange thoughts to say the least, some hilarious, others worrying. I had to read to the end, I was addicted, not sure if I was enjoying it, but kind of loving Sophie, while hating her actions. I’m a huge fan of Sara Pascoe and I could see so many elements of Sara’s sense of humour throughout. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest review.
“Funny”
(Hardback)
by Karen Hewitt
Written by comedian Sara Pascoe this is obviously and naturally funny. I loved that especially as the humour is very relatable about every day stuff. I too hate hugs, agreeing with main character Sophie that "they're too confining and imprisoning". And I now can't stop wondering about periods (you'll know what I mean if you read it). But, there wasn't really much of a storyline and it actually felt more like a long stand up sketch than a story. I didn't especially take to Sophie either because as the title suggests is a little weird. For example, following someone she fancies but barely knows to Australia (although to be fair a friend of mine did actually do this in real life) and wondering if life is just one big science experiment. So I did enjoy it but wanted more.
“A gritty Bridget Jones”

A gritty Bridget Jones. A young woman's perspective on love and life. (With laugh out loud observations). An easy read. You will root for this lass... She will make you laugh and cry. Great wit.
