This collection of stories entitled 'Weird Fiction: An Anthology' was recommended to me as I journeyed into reading more horror and ghost stories earlier this year. I had been thinking about reading from the likes of Poe and Lovecraft and thought this might offer me a touchstone introduction to the classic stories by these writers. I was not disappointed. I expected that these would be texts from centuries gone before us which introduced the general public to horror and ghost stories in the mass market. Of course, some of these are weirder than others - Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu sticking out to me as the most memorable story with the greatest longevity. These stories are 'tame' by today's horror fiction standards - however they have a longevity about them, a timeless sense of weird or creepiness which makes them a worthwhile read.

This was an interesting collection. Some of the stories I have read in other collections while others were very new. It has introduced me to some new authors that I am interested in following up as they were very well put together and had great themes and interesting characters. For anybody who has never tried any historical horror short stories this is a great place to start with a wide range of tale types and authors.
