The first few chapters introduce a diverse group of characters. The story begins with Andrew Fairbanks’s murder, which occurs on a yacht he was on for a drinks commercial. He’s shot in the head, tied up, and thrown overboard. Tragically, his death becomes an internet sensation, a fate he would’ve loved to experience if he were alive. Chapter 2 introduces Rosie D’Antonio, an author on an island getaway. She’s been receiving death threats and can’t leave the island until they’re resolved. Chapter 3 delves into Steve Wheeler’s life. He’s an ex-policeman turned private detective who lost his wife, Debbie, in a train accident a few years ago. Steve spends his days wandering around his village, Axley, talking to himself and Debbie, and taking notes on his surroundings using a dictaphone. Chapter 4 introduces Jeff Nolan, Amy Wheeler’s boss. He used to be an assassin for hire but gave it up after realising it was better to hire others to do the actual work. As the investigations begin, the reader is drawn into a web of intrigue. Rosie, aware of the killer’s identity, is left puzzled by the motive. Amy’s workout is interrupted by Kevin, an assassin hired to eliminate her simply because she’s around. Rosie overpowers him, and they escape on a leaking dinghy, their mission to reach the mainland and inform the sheriff about Kevin. However, their journey takes a chilling turn when they find Kevin murdered at his house. Meanwhile, Jeff discovers he’s also being targeted, leading him to contact Steve, Amy’s trusted friend, for help. Upon arriving at the campsite, Steve finds Jeff’s car windows smashed and tire tracks leading away, suggesting a kidnapping or murder. Steve suspects four murders, possibly even five, as the bloodshed intensifies. Amy urgently needs Steve in America to assist in solving these murders and protect herself and Rosie. The book is filled with intricate scenarios that must be resolved, leaving the reader guessing which murder will be the dominant factor and where all the clues will lead. The connection between Andrew Fairbanks’ murder and the unfolding mystery is also intriguing, considering Fairbanks’ lack of knowledge about the victims. Despite the complexities, the book remains an enjoyable and engaging read, which is typical of Richard Osman. It boasts colourful characters, each with distinct personalities, with only one character serving as a stark contrast. As the story progresses, the reader gains a deeper understanding of the interconnected narratives, ultimately finding satisfaction in the resolution of the mysteries. Osman’s writing is impeccable, the plot is intriguing, and the research is thorough and informative. One can’t help but wonder if Osman himself is a silent undercover hitman, adding an air of intrigue to the already captivating story.

Following a brand new cast of absolutely fantastic characters, comes a jaw dropping page turner of a new cozy crime! The utter enjoyment and love I have for this book is astounding. The way Osman creates these fantastic, yet down to earth characters, is amazing. The dialogue alone made every page so entertaining that I ended up reading it in one night! Osman has redefined crime/thrillers like never before, making the story feel so reflective of our present day experiences so that anyone can relate to any character. After the Thursday Murder Club series I knew this book would be amazing, but this will be a timeless classic that people will return to again and again. This is undoubtedly the best book of the year for me, a truly unmissable reading experience!

This is my first Richard Osman book, and to be totally honest I chose it because it was cozy crime with a cat on the cover, it sounded okay, but as I read the writing style of the first few pages I guiltily wondered how far I would get. Never mind, I'm always willing to give it a go. Good thing I did because fast forward a few pages and I'm happy to say I was really not expecting to have so much fun! I absolutely loved the big brilliant cast of characters including ex cop totally-out-of-his-comfort-zone Steve, his daughter in law trigger happy bodyguard Amy, and the completely fabulous famous author (of unknown age!) Rosie, right down to ChatGPT loving mystery bad guy Francois (those letters really made me laugh) as well as everyone in between (too many other great characters to comment on each of them and I don't want to give spoilers either, but I really hope some of these show up in the next book). A race around the world, a bunch of murders to solve, a plot that is full of twists, and a story packed full of humour and heart - what's not to like? give me book 2 now!! (this would also make a great TV series). A surprise 5 star read - I'm so glad I picked it up!

Oh, WOW. I personally thought that this book (although it would still be good) would be a bit down on the Thursday Murder Club books. Oh, boy was I wrong. This fun, funny, delightful, witty adventure has robbed me of all spare time for the forseeable future. As a student, I read Richard's books as a form of escapism, and they always bring me joy, including this one. Highly recommend to everyone.

I adored the first Thursday Murder Club book, certainly brilliantly written to bring joy, sadness and thought in equal measure. I have the other 3 books on my TBR but got We Solve Murders on the day of release. I read it in 5 sessions and loved it. Familiar enough so you know what to expect from the writing but different enough to be refreshing. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to more of the same in the future
