After the February half term break, I started a lunchtime picture book club for some of the younger children in school – something that I hope has been enjoyed as much by the children as it has by me. Initially as a parent, then as a childminder and now as a teacher, reading books with children has always been something I’ve enjoyed and this gorgeous title from publisher Scallywag Press is one that is perfect for sharing. Telling the story of a pumpkin as it grows from a small seed to the bright orange fruit associated with Hallowe’en, this title is an absolute delight as it takes the reader through the seasons from planting to harvest and explores the importance of both caring for the growing pumpkin and the patience required as it grows. The charming, simple text and bright, bold pictures work together perfectly making this one of those titles that youngsters at the start of their reading journey will adore as they turn to it time and time again and begin to learn the story to read to themselves. Adding hugely to the pleasure are the great many minibeasts adorning the pages in addition to the plant life and both children and adults will enjoy looking for them as they progress through the book. Perfect for pre-schoolers and those in EYFS/KS1 in school, this will be much loved by those who pick it up and although it refers to Hallowe’en, it would be a shame to confine it to October – it would be perfect throughout the year to complement any topics on the seasons, weather or minibeasts too. I adored it and I know that many of my Year 3s will too.
