Reviews: We Found a Hat (4)
“Genius, subversive picture book”
(Paperback)
by Dave at Taunton
I love Klassen and this book isn't at all disappointing. It's a simple story with simple illustrations but the reader can find so much meaning behind the eyes of his characters that provides tremendous depth to the tale. The images and few words manage to tell a story on more than one level, too, so there's something for the child, something for the parent and maybe even something more for those with an overactive imagination... Wonderful.
“Part Four: Reading about the Hat.”

One of the biggest dilemmas in children's literature - what do two turtles do when they find only one hat? It looks good on both of them, so in the interest of fairness neither of them has the hat. But sometimes, it's not as simple as just forgetting about the hat. One turtle can't stop thinking about the hat, even when they're supposed to be going to sleep, and so he is presented with a choice. Should he go back and get the hat meaning that only one of them has the hat? Or should he stay and neither of them have the hat and simply dream of the hat? In typical Jon Klassen style, this book is full of humour and stunning yet simple illustrations. The whole of the Hat trilogy is fantastic, but I have to say that this one is by far my favourite for the comedic value and how brilliant these two turtles are. It's a fun read for both children and grown ups!
“Clever and dry but warm and hopeful too”
(Paperback)
by Rachael at Altrincham
We love Jon Klassen's Hat trilogy and while this third installment retains the stripped back style and dry humour of the first two, it is more touching and less murdersome than the previous books! Here, two tortoises have found a hat. It looks good on them both, so what should they do? I say it every time, but it’s all in the eyes! The excitement at the find, the torment, the indecision, the love for hat and friend, the sorrow…although there are (a few) words, this story is as easily told through the pictures (and eyes) alone. And, as with This is Not My Hat, there are complex ideas subtly running through this, to be unpicked (or not) as much or as little as you want to. Fairness, sharing (or not), friendship, sacrifice and the feelings of others. While this wasn’t as dark as the other two books, it was just as clever, just as dry and just as beautifully illustrated and I really loved it just as much in the end. It was such a warm and hopeful end to the trilogy.
“Unusual for kids perhaps”

I bought the hat trilogy after hearing the children’s Laureate on the radio. I was surprised to see storylines about deceipt and eating other animals. I was unsure a child would understand what I felt was Punch magazine style. The parents of the child I bought them for said he liked them so that’s okay!
