Reviews: War Memorial (1)
“Excellent human history”
(Hardback)
Aslet combines a picture of a Devonshire village with details of the campaigns in which the 22 War Memorial named were engaged. Details of the individuals combine with information on the various campagns in which they were engaged - especially their "final" ones - drawn from many sources, many of them personal though not often of the individuals concerned, whose records are lost. Fortunately these dead cover a wide variety of campaigns, especially in WW1, so in addition to coverage of the village and its development there are quite full snapshots of several of the main military campaigns in a range of theatres of war. Very readable and admirably researched, an unusual book that scores in many directions.
