Reviews: Voidverse (1)
“Truly fascinating worldbuilding!”
(Hardback)
What a strange and surreal experience this book was! Voidverse has at its core some truly bizarre and alien worldbuilding; the story takes place on a series of floating ‘islands’ of rock suspended in an endless void. Only those with maps or strong navigational instinct are able to cross the void to another outpost, assuming they’re strong enough to not succumb to the crushing and oppressive isolation of the void. The setting doesn’t get a lot of explanation during the story - for me it was a little reminiscent of Area X in Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy; you need to go with the storytelling flow and set aside how little you understand the setting you find yourself in.
The plot mainly follows an anonymous traveller known as ‘The Sinker’ on a revenge plot to take down the vessel that once destroyed her home rock. I enjoyed the glimpses into the lives of the people living in these mini societies that seem so normal in isolation, and yet so strange from an outsider's perspective. Other characters are picked up along the way, and while the story never turns fully into a ‘rag-tag group of outcasts’ style of adventure, I enjoyed the character development of the few people we get to spend a bit more time with.
I couldn’t help but feel a little let down by the ending in all honesty. One or two characters have satisfying conclusions to their story arcs, though I found myself a little underwhelmed by the very end of the story. The whole book has a definite literary/speculative tone to it, and it's quite possible the conclusion went completely over my head, but I found the story left way too many unanswered questions for me to stomach.
