Vango does not know who he is or where he has come from. He is brought up by a woman who is not his mother and will not tell him anything. He spends an idyllic childhood on a Mediterranean island, becomes friends with the abbot of a secret monastery on an adjacent island and as the story begins is about to become a priest. The very first chapter is action packed and from here-on-in moves at a terrific pace across Vango's childhood and young adulthood. Many characters are introduced, all of whom are carefully drawn so that you feel that you know them all really well. The plotting is excellent; something that you puzzle over in one chapter, becomes clear later in the story. I simply could not put this book down until I had finished it and can't wait for the second to become available so that I can finally find out who Vango really is.

I cannot tell enough people to read this book. This is without a doubt in my top five books of all time. The story begins with Vango in Paris, where he is about to become a priest in the square outside Notre Dame. The police arrive, call his name and he runs. I don't want to spoil a single drop of this story for anyone so I'm not going to reveal much of the plot. By the time I had finished this book (book one - Between Sky and Earth) and it's sequel (book two - A Prince Without a Kingdom) and a whopping 886 pages later (that's the two books, don't worry!) I honestly felt as if I had travelled the world with a good friend, Vango Romano. It sounds insane but I can't explain how good this book is. If you're looking for a damn good story, then this is it. Faultlessly translated by the infamous Sarah Ardizzone, this book is just perfection. Just trust me on this one. You MUST read this book.
