Reviews: Unsinkable (1)
“Highly readable & emotion packed”
(Paperback)
Unsinkable is a highly readable nonfiction account of Corcoran’s ambitious endeavour to fulfil the extraordinary feat of swimming the length of Ireland in memory of his late father while raising funds for charity.
“Twenty-five-year-old Alan decided to raise money for charity by attempting a 500-kilometre length-of-Ireland sea swim (fifteen times the distance of the English Channel) from the Giant’s Causeway on the north coast to County Waterford on the south coast”, but did he sink or swim?
Some of you may recognise the author from his having completed 35 marathons in 35 days, but it soon becomes apparent that this swimming presents a unique set of challenges, both psychological and physiological.
Corcoran’s vivid storytelling, laced with humour and emotional highs and lows, soon draws us in and makes even the most mundane sections interesting.
As we follow along on each step of this swim, from the preparations Corcoran initially embarked upon, his rigorous training regimen, and then the varying conditions of the coastal swim.
But, we get much more than practicalities. This isn’t a swimming guide; it’s a memoir, after all, and Corcoran peppers the prose with touching reflections on the pain of losing his father and other personal notes.
Unsinkable is strewn with beautiful drawings and photos, and this enhanced my reading experience and engagement too.
Despite Corcoran facing several setbacks along the way, such as support boats dropping out and replacements taking on water, he maintains his determination throughout, which hopefully will also inspire others that they can trust in themselves to accomplish their goals. 4⭐
Many thanks to the author for a complimentary copy in return for an honest review.
