A fun, fresh, fabulous regency romp - the perfect holiday-reading book. I devoured this in two greedy sittings and went on a rollercoaster of emotions. As always, Lex has crafted an unputdownable adventure where the characters are flawed and relatable, and you are rooting for them to make it to their happy ending - and that happy ending may look quite different from what you'd usually expect in a romcom, but it works so well. Deeply satisfying, compelling, chortling-on-the-plane kind of funny, this is a book you don't want to miss.

I had the best time reading this book. Lex Croucher was already an auto-buy for me, having devoured all their previous books on the same day I received them, but this one had all my faves - witty, loveable characters, a brooding love interest and believable conflicts. 10/10

Thank you so much for the ARC of this fabulous book - another hit from Lex Croucher! A wonderful cast of unique characters, a plot that breaks free from so many of the period piece stereotypes and such a relatable main character - could not have asked for more. The story is so fresh and funny whilst also involving important, well-handled topics like grief, sexuality and chronic illness. The writing is so inviting and gave me such a sense of nostalgia for a life I've never lived - this was exactly what I needed to read right now. Would highly recommend!

Emily is such a great protagonist as she navigates life at Fairmont House under the guise of being her sister Amy, who actually has experience as a governess and was supposed to be the one taking up the position before she became too ill. Despite her plans to remain distant and lay low so as not to be discovered as a fraud or a thief (for she hopes to earn some more money for her sister through unsavory means), Emily can't help but be drawn into the camaraderie of the staff. This is a book brimming with lovable characters, I really wouldn't be able to pick a favourite from them all; they are written with such warmth and I loved the relationships between them all, especially as Emily came to find herself a member of their slightly dysfunctional (but endearingly so) family. I could barely put this one down and when I did I wanted to pick it right back up, I was so invested in Emily's story and how she might grapple with the consequences of her deception, especially as she became closer with Captain Edwards. He's another fantastic romantic lead and I adored all of his interactions with Emily, even when they were bickering. If you love the Regency period, romance, Bridgerton and its ilk, I genuinely can't recommend this book enough!
