Reviews: Trigger Mortis (8)
“A great fun read”
(Hardback)
by Richardlooney@barnet
Horowitz's Bond is a fun, pacy read with some great action sequences; one of the highlights being Bond in a Grand Prix racing car, ( which apparently Ian Fleming himself had drafted a similar scenario for a Bond TV show) bad guys and the return of Pussy Galore. This Version of Bond would definitely appeal not just to Bond fans but to a wider audience. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
“Almost Fleming”
(Hardback)
by Edward Armitage
From the very first page, this latest outing of the Bond series is instantly recognisable. Anthony Horowitz has clearly studied Fleming’s style and voice, his love of meticulous detail, his short, crisp descriptive flourishes, and his ability to suddenly accelerate into explosive action within a simple sentence. This occasionally unravels, however. The dialogue often rings false, characters seem unreal, occasional slips of the pen shatter the illusion that you are reading Fleming’s precise prose. That said, this is one of the better attempts by various well-known authors to write a credible Bond novel. The action doesn't disappoint, the plot keeps you glued to the page, and the whole package is easily digestible in a few sittings. For the serious Ian Fleming fan this edition has a wonderful surprise - ten or so pages of previously unseen material inserted into the back of the book. The fact that Fleming's original manuscripts have been photocopied rather than typed up adds an extra layer of authenticity. All in all a guilty pleasure.
