Hugely enjoyable, thoughtful and funny book with a great sense of place. Reminded me of Kate Atkinson at her very best.

I’m only disclosing that part of the story which is revealed on the book’s cover, when I describe Tracking Back as a crime mystery about a former footballer from the pre-Premier League era who has disappeared. A young lawyer Sarah Curtis, whose father knew the missing man, sets out to find him, assisted by a makeshift group of slightly oddball helpers. The opening chapters set up a high tempo, they are short and often deliver a surprise, establishing the momentum of the story. The characters are well drawn, the things they fuss over or regret are skilfully portrayed, likewise their disappointments and insights. The story is well paced, with touches of humour, and twists and surprises to keep the reader wanting more. You don’t have to love football to enjoy the book, you simply have to understand that other people care about the game and can sometimes see it as having a redemptive quality. Although there’s no “about the author” page, I understand this is his first novel, having previously written award-winning short stories and had plays performed. It bodes well for any novels that are to follow.
