Reviews: Tower Bridge Operations Manual (1)
“The only book on Tower Bridge you will ever need”
(Hardback)
by Spike
As we expect with Haynes manuals, this book is beautifully-researched, the author knows his subject so well that the "anorak" epithet is appropriate, and the photographs and illustrations are beautifully reproduced. The book is a very thorough examination of the structure and design of the bridge. I remember having to solve endless examples of cantilevered bridges with point and distributed loads, working out bending moments, reactions and stresses - but to see the same approach taken to resolving the forces in a real and very famous bridge is really fascinating. The book also presents a very complete and very readable history of the bridge from the first time that a bridge near the Tower of London - a "Tower Bridge" - was proposed to the most recent technology upgrades. A truly definitive monograph on the bridge, a great visitor guide and a jolly good read.
