Reviews: Today Will Be Different (1)
“A joy to behold”

If I were stuck on a desert island I would want Maria Semple with me to keep my spirits up. We would laugh so much we wouldn't be looking for rescue...ah well, until the food ran out, that is. That pretty much describes my feelings toward Today Will Be Different. Eleanor's world is one I was loath to leave after the final page. This novel was fresh, sharp with wit and sarcasm, affectionately awkward (as only family dynamics can be), with a story that kept me chuckling aloud. It is fair to suggest there are similarities with Where'd You Go Bernadette?, Maria Semple's previous book. As there are more than a couple. But, Eleanor, Timby and Joe are characters in their own right - with their own story arcs - and deserve high fives for entertaining us in this delightfully quirky book. I could never grow tired of Ms. Semple's sense of humor and love to see it used to such good effect. It simply sparkles with mischievous glee and enriches each character's actions and dialog. As you can see, I am full of admiration for this book and enjoy how it made me feel. In this day and age of serial killer thrillers and depressing politics, it's good to know there is relief in the form of a giggle-laden Maria Semple book.
