Reviews: Thirst (41)
“A thoughtful account of a difficult topic”
(Hardback)
by Tim, Walton
A tender and thoughtful account of the comedian's life through the prism of his complex relationship with alcohol. John tells the story of his reckoning with alcoholism with warmth and his trademark wit. It is at times shocking as he describes the lengths he would go to for a drink and how normalised his behaviour became. But it also hopeful and encouraging that recovery, while ongoing and hugely challenging, is achievable. This is a difficult subject area but here it is handled with great care and respect for everyone affected by his drinking. I would thoroughly recommend this book and think it will bring a great deal of hope, inspiration and guidance to many.
“Engaging and insightful”

This is a must read, of course, for any fans of John Robins and for anyone who is struggling with the impact of alcohol and addiction on their lives, but the book also has a much wider appeal. It’s such a beautifully written account of overcoming challenges and learning to know and love oneself - it’s thoughtful, funny, wise and incredibly hopeful. It’s a real testament to the power of friendship too. Days after finishing I’m still thinking about it.

As a massive fan of JJR I thought I had heard all his stories. This book is full of all the stuff he has left out in the past. An honest journey of his relationship with alcohol and the journey he made to over come it. This is the most honest book I have ever read, although serious (as you would expect!) in places - parts that make you laugh out loud. He is brilliant and this is a brilliant read.
“Honest, insightful, emotional and very funny.”

First and foremost, I'd say that John is a wonderful writer. This book is unflinchingly honest and I feel like I have learnt so much about how it feels to live with this struggle. There were beautiful moments of poetry, and many moments that made my heart hurt, but John knows just when we need the relief of a laugh, and I did laugh a lot. Also, excellent use of asterisks. A huge recommend from me.
“Exceptional”

I echo most of what’s already been said. It’s made me re-evaluate my relationship with alcohol through a lens I can see through and relate to. Wonderfully funny and touching throughout.
