Jamie MacDoran is an ordinary LA guy, he enjoys playing baseball, skateboarding and listening to the latest music. Like most young people, he hangs out with a group of close friends and is glued to his mobile phone. Then, Jamie's dad is killed in a car accident and Jamie and his mother find themselves on a remote Scottish island. Not only thousands of miles away physically, but thousands of miles away from his usual life. The island has no mobile reception, no internet, no TV, in fact, not much of anything. Jamie's Dad was the Chieftain of the Doran clan, and although he lived and worked in America, he still held Doran dear to his heart. So, not only do Jamie and his mother have to deal with his death but they also have to deal with the clan. Who will be elected the new Chieftain? This debut novel from Ken Howard is an excellent adventure story, also a mystery - modern,yet seeped in history. All is not well on Doran - there is a fight to become the new Chief - and there are certain people who want to rule for the wrong reasons. Jamie is a very strong character and his adventures are well-written, fast paced and really kept my attention. Howard takes the reader back into history whilst still keeping the modern-day feel that is bound to appeal to Young Adult readers. I'd say this book is aimed at readers aged around 11 and over, but adult readers will most definitely enjoy the story too. I'm guessing that there may be more stories from Jamie in the future and I'll look forward to them.
