Reviews: The Widow (33)
“Extremely gripping!”
(Hardback)
I received an ARC of this book, and have hungrily eaten up the entire story, and am desperate for more! John Grisham has not disappointed me at all. Fantastic characters, a very believable storyline, and I could have just carried on reading and reading. The ending could have been longer! I wish there was a sequel. Thank you.

“Enjoyable and compelling!”
(Hardback)
This author has been producing legal thrillers for many years and “The Widow” is both in this category and also a murder mystery.
Simon Latch is a lawyer just about scraping a living in a small town in Virginia. He has gambling debts and a divorce on the horizon. When 85 year old widow, Eleanor Barnett, walks into his office to rewrite her will he thinks it will be a straightforward job. However it soon becomes apparent that Eleanor has a lot more in the way of assets and Simon thinks she might be the answer to his money problems.
He befriends her, redoes her will and decides to bide his time, hoping to eventually cash in.
Unfortunately Eleanor suddenly passes away and after an investigation, Simon is accused of her murder. He swears he did not do it but he has motive and opportunity. At first the reader is not sure whether to believe his protestations of innocence but as the novel progresses it seems that Simon might really be innocent.
This is a typical Grisham with some great court room scenes but also plenty of mystery as Simon and his colleagues try to solve the mystery of the murder. There are few suspects and little in the way of motive so the task does prove difficult.
This was an enjoyable and compelling read- I did sympathise with Simon but he did not help himself throughout most of the novel, a gambling habit and excess greed are not pleasant attributes.
I raced through the book and would recommend it to mystery and legal thriller fans.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
“Excellent”
(Hardback)
It’s been a very long time since I have read a book by the author and this reminded me what I have been missing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Another great legal read with brilliant courtroom scenes.
“Another great Grisham legal thriller”
(Hardback)
I really enjoyed The Widow by John Grisham who has been and will always be one of my favourite authors. I first read his books as a teen, dreaming of wanting to work in a law firm and sit on a jury, so one out of two 2 isn't bad and the books just get better and better.
The Widow is the story of an elderly lady who seeks out legal advice from Simon Latch a small town, one man band lawyer as she apparently has a lot of wealth. Later the old lady dies and Simon is accused of her murder.
I don't want to give more away than that, as I went into this book without reading anything about it and really enjoyed the whole thing.
It has the usual Grisham style of writing and with lots of twists turns along the way and when you think you've got it all sussed out, you haven't. Lots of tension and twists and courtroom drama along the way.

There's still plenty of time for the jury service part!!

“What’s the truth”
(Hardback)
I’ve read a few of John Grisham’s books in the past and it’s fair to say this wasn’t my favourite, the overall story is good but I never really took to any of the characters and it felt like I was almost halfway through before any real action started taking place. Simon Latch is a small town lawyer who only just makes enough money, likes to gamble and is facing divorce so when he meets a widow who implies she has significant wealth when he meets he to rewrite her will he sees an opportunity to make some real money. For quite a while this focusses on Simon’s life where he’s found himself living above his office with quite a focus on his gambling which I really didn’t understand about in honesty, not sure if that’s me or that part just doesn’t translate well to a UK audience and also on his time spent befriending the widow. The widow did add an element of doubt as it was never possible to ascertain if she really was wealthy but for the first half of the book that was the most gripping detail. When Simon was accused of her murder things did get more interesting but it was still quite slow paced. I thought the murder trial was well covered and events after were more gripping too but this book never really gained much momentum. The ending was very abrupt but did leave scope for future books featuring some of the characters in this. 7/10
