The Widow is another of those terrific psychological crime thrillers that grips, teases and taunts you from start to finish. From the first chapter I was hooked and couldn’t leave it alone reading this in one sitting. Is Glen a victim of circumstance just a man in the wrong place at the wrong time falsely accused of child abduction and worse? His wife Jean claims he’s a loving husband and she lives with a cloud of suspicion and quiet accusation. When Glen dies the widow is circled by the police and news reporters as they hope for a chance to prise the truth from her. This was beautifully paced with strong characters who are well drawn and each with their own motivations and self-doubts. I can highly recommend this engaging story crime thriller that will have you enthralled to the last page. The Widow, The Reporter, The Detective and The Mother have alternate chapters in the book. The reader is pulled into each of their little worlds hearing the story as it unfolds from their perspectives feeling their tensions while learning about Glen and what he’s like second-hand. The author Fiona Barton cleverly drip-feeds us the facts and leaves us dangling on the edge of knowing yet not knowing what really occurred. The widow Jean is an excellent character who is hard to tie down and judge for the police, the reporter and the reader. Her world has been shattered and we are left with mixed feelings for her of sympathy, suspicion and frustration as she stands by her man. The book is definitely worth a read and I loved the police procedural aspect and its human failings. Played out over a number of years the book slips occasionally back in time to explain events. The writing just flows and everyone in it made real which makes it all the more frightening plausible. What seems just an ordinary suburban home and an average marriage is pulled apart to reveal dark secrets and terrible lies. But it provides us with a great story… Thank you to the publishers for the review copy of this book in return for an honest opinion.

An excellent read and is interesting and keeps you hooked right from the first chapter. I read this aftet the girl on the train and enjoyed it just as much if not better!
