Reviews: The Waking Fire (2)
“Indiana Jones with Dragons!”
(Hardback)
There was so much about this book I loved, from the 3 protagonists who are all different but complimentary, to the world building which immediately drops you into this wonderful steam-punk/Victoriana style world. His world building reminded me immediately of Scott Lynch's fantastic level of detail without being overly complicated, and Marie Brennan's 'Lady Trent' Victorian inspired dragon books.. At it's heart this is a real classic adventure novel, with a quest and archaeological themes about hunting down a mythical dragon for its blood - it's worth pointing out that the world revolves around blood-blessed, people who are able to gain superhuman abilities by consuming the blood of different dragon breeds. The white Dragon our heroes are chasing has apparently never been seen but is expected to have some unknown power in its blood, and the journey to find it is one of the most satisfying fantasy adventures I've read in quite a while. I'm looking forward to more in this series!
“More guns than swords in every shape and dimension”
(Hardback)
If you're expecting something like The Ravens Shadow Trilogy you would be mistaken. Having said that this weighty tome is well worth reading. The authors world building skills are excellent and the characters are are well written and diverse. Lots of action and inventive weapons, more guns than swords of every shape and dimension.
The book is told via the actions of the three main characters who play various roles in this epic , all seamlessly linked together to form the storyline. The link between different coloured dragons or drakes as they are referred to is not always pleasant. To understand more you will just have to read it for yourself. I for one am interested to see how the story progresses.
