The Visitor published in 2000 was the fourth book in the Jack Reacher series. We continue to see the development of Reacher as a character. Lee Child has created and written a brilliant thriller which takes your breath away, showing the Americans what a real American hero is all about. Reacher is having dinner in an Italian restaurant with Jodie Garber. She is on the fast track to partner at the law firm whereas Reacher is going nowhere fast. While eating he notices that owner is being shaken down and he decides to do something about it. What he does not realise is that this will bring him to the attention of the FBI. Three former friends and army personal are being killed, the FBI and the behavioural scientists are attempting to find evidence. They need someone like Reacher to consult with, not that he has much choice. The profile the FBI had build could cover any former or current member of the United States army. Reacher cannot see how these so-called perfect murders were happening, though he could state why they were happening. Reacher tries to find patterns; he knows they are there, and they will eventually become apparent. Aided by FBI agent Harper they travel across America chasing a killer who is staying one step ahead of them. Childs has written another excellent Reacher thriller with plenty of drama and excitement.

As a massive fan of the Lee Child character Jack Reacher I was disappointed by this installment, it feels like Jack is on abit of a wild goose chase, there a very few classic 'Reacher moments' and the whole read is a little frustrating to be honest. I've read the previous four Reacher novels and they have all been excellent, especially the first one 'Killing Floor'. This has in no way deterred me from reading the next Reacher novel (i've already bought it!) and i hope for a return to form.
