Reviews: The Variations (2)
“"Rain prickles my skin. It gathers in drips and drops whose plinking rhythms interrupt the otherwise pristine quiet"”
(Paperback)
Thick, complex and passionate; a moment of silence in a loud world. My only advice for this novel is this: stick with it. I felt it took me a while to get into the swing of Langley's beautiful yet conceptual narrative, and the creation of atmosphere was difficult to fully immersive yourself in. The overarching story was without a doubt compelling and absorbing, and I would recommend this book to someone who has time, care and a need for a vivid and ingenious read.

(Paperback)
A reclusiveve composer Selda Heddle is found dead in a field near her home in Cornwall, she has the gift that is passed onto her grandson Wolf who is trying to make sense of the voices in his head and the images of dead people he sees. The story goes on to tell us about Selda's unusual life and her experience in a home for gifted children. It is beautifully written, but is difficult to follow. This may be because this is a proof copy, the editors should be able to clean it up. It is also overly long, could do with shortening to make it tighter.
Give it a generous 3 stars as the written word is beautiful
