Although as adults we possibly tend to ignore insects unless they are particularly attractive or threaten to sting us, children – especially the very young – are frequently fascinated by them and will happily spend their time searching them out. In this rhyming picture book, we meet an assortment of bugs in a story that centres around one who just happens to be a master baker. With their delicious confections attracting crowds of visitors, the baker and her kitchen staff are kept busy baking and decorating a sumptuous range of sweet treats but when her employees suddenly all up sticks and leave, she is left wondering how on earth she will manage to clean up the mess left behind and keep her business going. Could it be that rather than just being customers, those who come to call on her will actually prove to be friends? We all experience times when something unexpected happens and we are faced with what at first glance appears to be a disaster of epic proportions. Here, the baker initially has no idea how to even start on sorting things out until help is given by those around her. For very young readers, who have neither the life experience or emotional maturity to tackle what seem to them to be unsurmountable problems, the message is clear: there will always be those who are willing to help and by breaking down the tasks that need to be completed into small steps, each is actually achievable to overcome whatever has happened. Accompanying the text are Alison Jay’s beautiful illustrations that bring both the insects and the busy bakery and tea shop to life brilliantly well. Children will really enjoy poring over the pages to spot the little details that have been included, such as a ladybird busily washing up, that make this a real feast for the eyes. On this occasion, I didn’t listen to the audiobook version of the story that is available via a handy QR code tucked away at the back of the book but this seems to be regular extra included by the publisher that I’m sure will be made good use of.
