Reviews: The Thinning (1)
“a powerful tale”
(Paperback)
The Thinning is the seventh novel by award winning bestselling Australian author, Inga Simpson. Now in her late teens, Finley and her mother have lived off-grid for some years, alongside others of the same persuasion. Renowned astrophotographer-turned-activist, Dianella Kelvin made the decision to go “illegal” when her astronomer husband, Professor Phil Kelvin succumbed to silicosis, a tragic event that coincided with the passing of a government Population Bill which would radically alter Fin’s future.
Now, their readiness to go deep into hiding in the NSW countryside is tested when official vehicles turn up at the deserted Siding Spring Observatory that has been their refuge. But Fin confesses that she was spotted by a young Incomplete, making their departure even more urgent. This, two days before the solar eclipse which will see an influx to the area of amateurs and professionals eager to observe.
As they make their way to the agreed spot, it’s that young Incomplete they encounter, but rather than being a threat, it’s clear he needs their help: his parents taken by those officials, Terry is a fugitive from researchers who want to study the special abilities with which this new breed of human is endowed.
His appeal cannot be ignored, but Fin is chagrined when she has to take them along to complete three important tasks required of her: she doesn’t want to be a babysitter, especially to someone she’s not sure she can trust.
Simpson easily evokes her setting with some gorgeous descriptions of the landscape. The events occur in a future Australia that is hotter and less diverse than the one we know: extinctions have saddened and shocked, but demands for power and precious metals have destroyed habitats and threatened vital water supply. The name of the greedy multi-national is so thinly veiled that readers will easily guess the culprits of this destruction.
But it’s not all doom and gloom: Simpson’s characters are surprisingly resourceful and courageous, and play their part in a plan to help restore some equilibrium. And with some training from indigenous rangers, Fin shows respect for country, for the wildlife and the vegetation. This is a powerful tale that encourages us not to lose hope.
