Reviews: The Siege (16)
“The best book I've read this year”
(Hardback)
Ben Macintyre's The Siege depicts the incredible true story of the 1980 hostage situation inside the Iranian Embassy. The book offers an insiders look into what really happened on both sides of the cordon, as well as a full introduction to the players involved; the hostages, the gunmen, and the police.
This fascinating true story is not only written with tact and accuracy, but it feels like the narrative of a best-selling thriller. It's accessible and easy to follow, despite being full of important political and historical context, whilst also offering an entertaining read.
As someone who doesn't normally read non-fiction, I can say with certainty that I will definitely be reading more Ben Macintyre in the future.
I have read almost 70 books so far this year, and this, hands down, is the best.
“Outstanding”
(Paperback)
Ben Macintyre once again with a gripping, well researched and highly entertaining book.
So much information and suspense built throughout the book especially towards the action end.
This is the eighth book of his I have read and I pray he brings out more!
“Brilliant book.”
(Hardback)
Ben MacIntyre is well renowned as an extremely accomplished writer and this account of The Seige is not only exciting, it is completely accurate and true. I served at the scene as a Police Officer, for six days, and can find no fault with this book. To my surprise I appear in one of the photographs in the book. Ben MacIntyre's writing style is easy to follow and he has excelled himself with this quite remarkable book. Highly recommended.
“A fascinating and gripping read.”
(Hardback)
I found the book gripping from the start. It follows the different people caught up in the Siege at the Iranian Embassy. The style is highly readable and should also appeal to readers who usually enjoy fiction. At times it almost reads like a thriller.
He has clearly carried out a lot of research and covers the experiences, motivations and backgrounds of different people caught up in this extraordinary event.
There are also the occasional bizarre, humorous and almost farcical details.
I highly recommend.
“More than you knew”
(Hardback)
I have read every book written by Ben Macintyre and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Ben is a pacey writer which makes me turn page after page in quick succession, savouring the well constructed, researched information contained therein, at the same time knowing that I shall rapidly, swiftly, sadly reach the end.
At the time of the Siege I watched the TV coverage and read the newspaper coverage of the Iranian Embassy Siege; however, Ben's book on the episode is a "MUST READ". There is so much more to learn on the subject.
