Reviews: The Rook (10)
“This is a cracker of a read!”
(Hardback)
by Tuija at Kingston Bentall Centre
“Dear You, the body you are wearing used to be mine.” As first sentences go, this is a cracker! And the promise of that first sentence is fully borne out in the subsequent story which will keep you reading to the very last page. Myfanwy Thomas wakes up with no memory of what has happened and in possession of a letter from her former self that directs her to a set of further letters and dossiers left behind by who she used to be – Rook Thomas of the Checquy Court, the oldest and truly bizarre branch of the Secret Service. While she deals with the day-to-day running of the agency, she is also trying to find out who erased her former self and who is the traitor in the Checquy’s ranks. The writing is fast paced and funny so if you are a fan of Jasper Fforde and anything supernatural, this is a book for you!
“Absolutely fabulous!”
(Paperback)
by Penelope Bullock at Lancaster
A fast paced, original and endlessly inventive supernatural thriller which is constantly surprising, incessantly exciting and extremely funny. I loved this book and all the wonderful characters we are introduced to and the chaotic world they live in. I've read it twice now and it was even better second time around and I'm delighted to have book 2 'Stiletto' to go straight on to.

Not all good books need a love story at the heart. The rook has a grip on you from the first page to the last. Treason? Please. Powerful mutants? Yes please. A crazy storyline dragging you through this fiction so fast you actually start to believe its true? Oh go on then!
“Thoroughly enjoyable”
(Paperback)
by Janette Fraser
A secret organisation run by people with special powers defends Britain from the supernatural. This is the world we are thrust into when a woman wakes in a park surrounded by corpses with no memory of who she is or how she got there. Through a series of letters she must decide what to do with this new life, and whether or not she wants to know the truth about the woman she used to be. This is a really compelling book, with enjoyable set pieces and a whodunnit at it's heart. The only downsides were a few Americanisms in supposedly British characters - strangely described pronounciations and turns of phrase we simply don't use and just niggled with me. Despite that, I wanted to know what would happen next and how Myfanwy would develop as a character. If there's more to come in this series I shall definitely be reading them.
“really enjoyed this book”

An unusual fantasy which I believe is the start of a new series. This is based around a supernatural organization who protects against supernatural threats.the organization's hierarchy is based on the positions and terms of chess. It starts with M. Thomas waking up surrounded by bodies and with no memory. The book follows how this happened and what happened next. An engrossing and engaging read I would highly recommend it.
