By chance I picked up both The Outsider (interested by the famous opening line) and The Myth of Sisyphus together, and read Sisyphus (a book of essays regarding the meaning of life, the absurd man and suicide) first. This gave me invaluable insight into the mind of Camus, and gave context to a very complex story about a very simple man. It's a heavy read, but holds great potential to change the way one thinks about life, death and the journey between.

I really liked this book. I thought it was so interesting and was hooked from the first page. The story telling is really good which makes you sort of understand the character. Definitely worth a read as it is a short book too!

Camus conveys a profound experience of the ordinary man. In fact, such is the deep normality of Meursault that brands him as extraordinary. This is a deeply reflective work of the human experience and purpose that I believe I was only truly able to absorb by the latter part of the novel. I struggle to convey the titanic emotion of first reading this short work. I chose this novel due to my interest in translation. In this regard I believe Sandra Smith retains the unique style of Camus within English, retaining literary nuances. The Translator's Note gave good insight into the methodology of translating such a complex work and I believe helped me better understand the language used.

This book is short in length but packed full of philosophical meaning, and captivated me from beginning to end. A true classic
