Foundation doctor Violet Winters is starting her first week of nights and she’s nervous. Violet found the study easy, but her people skills are lacking and she has to terrible of habit of saying the first thing that pops into her head. Both her parents are doctors, they make it look easy, so rather than go home for Christmas she does the night shift over the holidays, and dodge telling them she's had two complaints lodged against her in a couple months. Dr Gus Jovic is an anaesthetist and the opposite of Violet, he’s calm and confident and nothing fazes him and the nurses and patients think he’s wonderful. In a busy English hospital during the silly season, Violet and Gus have to deal with accidents, emergencies and older people whose health is declining and Violet feels tired, overwhelmed and out of her depth. As the nights pass, Violet really admires Gus, not just because he's brilliant at his job, willingness to help and has steady hands, he's good looking man and no way he would be interested in an awkward string bean like herself and anyway he’s engaged to the stunning Amelia? While this book is classed as a romcom, I found it highlighted some serious topics, like doctors adjusting from studying to treating real patients, coping with working the night shift, having a good bedside manner doesn’t always come naturally, getting on the your co-workers and sexism. Move over Bridget Jones, I found Violet Winters the quirkiest and funniest person ever, along with some memorable patients, her diverse friends, parents and supportive nurses and a handsome doctor it's a fantastic read and will literally have you in stitches. Five stars from me and I highly recommend The Night Shift and yes it does get a little racy.

The Night Shift, could almost be Beth O’Leary and Ali Hazlewood’s love child, except it’s pure Nancy Peach pedigree. Witty, clever and heartfelt, her writing absolutely drew me in and this is one of my favourite reads this year. If you don’t fall for Violet and Gus plus their adorable friends, you’ve got a very hard heart. Nancy Peach’s writing is as always, funny, witty, warm and original.

As a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, The Pitt and other medical shows, I was really interested in what «The Night Shift» had to offer. I had high hopes and the book met my expectations… and even exceeded them! When we get into the story, we meet Violet, a foundation doctor who’s doing night shifts during Christmas’ week to avoid spending time with her parents, both doctors; she feels like she might disappoint them since she feels like she’s not made for medicine because she has trouble communicating with her workmates and can’t seem to bond with her patients. Gus is an anesthesiologist who chose to do night shifts because his fiancé abandoned him and he’s going through a lot right now. During those night shifts, Violet and Gus meet each other and connect immediately. They understand each other in a way no one around them does; Violet likes how professional, caring and attentive he is and Gus likes how bold, sincere and Frank she is. «The Night Shift» is not a shallow romantic comedy, it shows humanity in depth through its characters’ evolution. Family and trust issues, impostor syndrome, mobbing, neurodivergence, doctor/patient relationship… All those topics are approached marvelously in this book. I enjoyed how balanced romance and medicine practice are; it gives you both romantic dynamics and insights on how hard it is to have the life of others in your hands. On top of that, the romance is a slow burn: their bond grows stronger as they begin to trust each other both at a personal level and a professional level. Violet and Gus are like puzzle pieces who fit just right, they help each other reach their best version. It wasn’t an easy romance: there were doubts and misunderstandings involved, but everything was handled with maturity and communication. I don’t think I will forget those characters in a long time. I can’t put into words how well-written Violet and Gus are and how much I will miss them from now on.

These two, oh they just stole my heart. What a beautiful story theirs was. Violet is starting her first round of night shifts and although she loves what she does, helping people, she’s nervous. She’s not like other people, she’s abrupt and tells people how it is even if it comes across as rude or patronising. So she keeps herself to herself and only talks when necessary. Gus is an anaesthetist working the night shifts and couldn’t be more different to Violet. He’s a people pleaser and loves making people comfortable when he’s talking to them and he’s willing to help anyone in need out even if his schedule is already full. In a packed hospital with not enough staff Violet and Gus meet for the first time and from there they keep bumping into each other and end up quickly becoming friends. She admires the way he will happily help anyone and he adores how to the point she is, no hidden agendas just straight to the point. Watching these two form a friendship which quickly turns to more has been exciting. I’ve loved getting to know these characters, learning about their truths and what has hurt them. I’ve loved watching the way each character grows throughout the book and the journey along the way. This author is new to me and I’m so happy this book was my first, I instantly loved these characters from the moment I started reading, I’m just sad that I’ve finished now haha. The Night Shift was a fun work place romance with an opposites attract element. It was cute, it was fun with a touch of heartbreak thrown in the mix.

I loved this - Nancy Peach’s style of writing is fun, witty and heartfelt without being soppy. Seeing junior doctor Violet trying to get over her issues and connect with her patients whilst also figuring out how she feels about Doctor Perfect Gus was delicious. I don’t really get the reviews that say there was too much medical stuff? I didn’t feel like it was in-depth and was window dressing for the setting and I was interested to disappear into this really specific world of a night shift! Loveable characters learning and falling in love - what’s not to adore?!
