Reviews: The Monk (11)
“The Monk by Tim Sullivan”
(Paperback)
The Monk by Tim Sullivan is another police mystery in the DCI Cross series. This time the murder of a Benedictine Monk will affect one of Cross’s friends. As you read more of the series you see how George has accumulated a small group of friends and acquaintances. His mother has reappeared in his life and Brenda and Raymond are enjoying each other’s company.
The murder in this story is quite savage and it isn’t until near the end that all the facts are laid out and arranged for Cross to be satisfied with the results.
Highly recommended
“Excellent”
(Paperback)
I adore Sullivan's DS Cross books. Cross is a highly intelligent, meticulous and autistic detective. In this, he has to apply his uniqueness to finding the person who murdered a monk. The how was evident, but the why was the elusive question because why would anyone want to kill a monk? We have a further insight into his personal life (and personality) when he finally learns why his mother left him when he was a young boy. Details he, with his very special acuity, finds it not altogether straightforward to process.
Sullivan has the knack of giving you an easy read, despite twists, turns and complex plot. It's enthralling, fast-paced and he gives you not only the charismatic DS Cross, but wonderful characters in his police team.
Sullivan is a brilliant author and in Cross gives us a wonderful, intriguing and enigmatic character, who isn't hard to like.
I've now read two Cross books. Very fortunately, I have at least two more to look forward to.
“The Monk”
(Paperback)
Possibly the best in this series so far - must order the next! In every book we learn something new about our main character, love how this progresses and the support from his teammates. These books are about far more than police investigations.
“Excellent ~ Great addition to Series!”

The Monk by Tim Sullivan
DS Cross Mystery #5
Brilliant, socially awkward, orderly, puzzle solver, seeker of justice, intriguing~ George Cross is a character that never fails and never lets me down ~
What I liked:
*George Cross: police detective sergeant, sees the world a bit differently as he is ‘on the spectrum’, never knowingly offends, literal, concrete, solves every case, complex and yet simple, organist, repairs old organs, growing in social awareness, prefers routine & quiet
* Josie Ottey: detective sergeant partnered with George, single parent, mother of two, paired with George because she “gets” him, has an impact on him, has big decisions to make
* Alice MacKenzie: police staff investigator, younger, eager, enjoys working with George, interested in Swift
* Michael Swift: forensic specialist, professional, focused, admires George, has a place for everything and everything in its place, a bit quirky, interested in Alice
* Raymond: George’s father, retired, raised George alone, has secrets that come out gradually
* Christy: George’s mother, finding out why she left when George was five, would like to know more about her
* Joseph: a local priest in the church George practices/plays organ in one hour per week, brother of murdered Monk in this story
* The time spent with George in the Abbey both repairing the organ and when on the case
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The police procedural aspects of the story that move methodically till all of the puzzle pieces fit together and the case was solved
* Knowing that there is another book to look forward to

“Absolutely brilliant”
(Paperback)
This is #5 in the DS George Cross but can easily be read as a standalone and in any order. However, I’ve read all five books and highly recommend the whole series.
DS George Cross is based in Bristol’s Major Crimes Unit. He has Asperger’s so is not always socially aware, but his incredible attention to detail makes him the officer with the highest clear-up rate in the Avon and Somerset force. He has a great partner in DS Josie Ottey; they work well together but she also helps him to understand things that his Asperger’s makes difficult.
The body of a monk is found badly beaten and tied to a chair in woodland near Bristol. He turned out to be Brother Dominic from a nearby monastery. Who would want to do this to a monk? He lived a good and quiet life with his fellow monks who were all very fond of him. He had given up his former life for his faith but could his death be connected to his wealthy former life, rather than his current life?
A very cleverly written book that kept me totally gripped.
Thank you to NetGalley and Aria & Aries, Head of Zeus for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
