Reviews: The Metarevolution (1)
“A witty and strident call to alms”
(Paperback)
by Cherry Fox
This is a very timely book from the assistant editor of Philosophy Now, in which he criticizes our current capitalist system as being very much like a balloon. In order for this system to work, it must continually expand, as more and more people get richer by producing more and more goods. However, since there is a finite amount of resources on planet Earth, this system cannot keep forever expanding. Indeed, since we are now living in the worst economic crisis for generations, the detrimental effects of such a boom and bust process are very evident. To counter this, Grant Bartley proposes a Two Zone economy: the First Zone would provide for the basic needs of the people, allowing artists and creative thinkers to flourish without having to flounder in the capitalist Second Zone. This scheme would allow everyone to reach their full potential, and would thus raise everyone’s standard of living. Grant Bartley points out that our current way of doing things must obviously change; however, he is understandably very wary of the examples of past revolutions, which have led to the suffering of millions of people, as their original altruistic motivations were succumbed by totalitarian despots. Indeed, in some of the more amusing passages, Grant Bartley imagines himself as having become such a despot! So, Grant Bartley proposes that humanity should embark on a continually evolving revolution, a ‘metarevolution’ instead. Grant Bartley is a committed Christian, and while he thinks that the Church should play a huge role in the First Zone economy, he is especially critical of the Right Wing Church today for not following Christ’s teachings. He goes beyond this to call on all the major religions to play a role, and to thus embark on an alms race! Grant Bartley doesn’t claim to have all the answers; as such a thing would be impossible in the metarevolution, which, by its very nature, has to be adaptable and flexible. However it remains to be seen whether Grant Bartley’s metaphorical metarevolutionary virus will ever be as infectious as he desires.
