Reviews: The Killables (4)
“Brill read from start to finish”
(Paperback)
by RazorRay
When i first picked up this book, I didn't think it would have me gripped to every page, filled with excitement. I really enjoyed how the book is set and that people are all evil unless they are in the city. I can honestly say, hand on heart that it is one of the best books i have read and i can't wait until the next book of the series.
“One of the best since Hunger Games”
(Paperback)
by Carol Ann Noble at Carlisle
I loved this book. It's the best teen read since 'The Hunger Games', and although not half as good as these (although lets face it, nothing will ever match it), it is great. There's a leeetle bit of romance, but not much so it won't alienate the boys. A very dark, but fascinating book that kind of reminded me of the Christian Bale film 'Equilibrium'.
“Gripping once it gets going”
(Paperback)
by Sarah Fay at Wells
Another dystopian novel which makes a really fantastic and believable read. Questioning the morals behind labelling a society in terms of status, it feels a little reminiscent of Malorie Blackman's 'Noughts and Crosses.' Evie lives in The City - a place where everyone wears their label so people can clearly see their status. Do something good and your status can be improved. But if the System catches thinking evil thoughts then you face being labelled a 'K' and having to be reconditioned. Life within the City walls is safe - outside and you face the possibility of encountering the Evils. It felt a little slow to begin with, taking a bit too long to finally get into the nitty gritty of the action. But once it got going I was well and truly gripped. With well rounded characters that all have their own little faults and flaws it makes for a very believable story - certainly something that I could forsee as being the future that we could find ourselves in. If you have enjoyed any of the other dystopian fantasy books that are around at the moment, like Sarah Crossan's 'Breathe' then you will definitely love this one too; I'm already looking forward to book 2 'The Disappearances' which comes later this year!
“The Killables”
(Paperback)
by Hannah Busby at Lincoln High Street
This was a thoroughly absorbing read, it didn't lack for action, but by the same token a lot of attention was paid to the big moral questions that surrounded living in a city entirely controlled by the System which decides who is good and who is bad based on the most arbitrary of decisions. I found Evie to be a really refreshing main character. She isn't automatically fantastic at everything she turns her hand to and really, her main gift, her weapon of choice is her mind. Lucas is also particularly well done. But Raffy, the love interest, mostly irritated me. He's a fool. Overall It's an intelligent and gripping read - I'm looking forward to book two!
