Reviews: The Kellerby Code (25)
“Full of humour”
(Paperback)
A wonderfully humorous murder novel in the vein of Saltburn (without the weird sex) where our hero is mistreated by his rich theatrical "friends" and it all gets a bit murdery
“A clever compelling tale”
(Hardback)
A really clever thriller with Edward, the narrator- a good guy. He is at the beck and call of his ‘mate’ Robert, a budding theatre director and the enigmatic Stanza. The tale revolves around these 3 characters and Kellerby, the family home (estate) of Kellerby. Eloquently written- the first of many from Jonny Sweet I’m sure. I can see this as an adaptation on Netflix. How to describe it without giving anything away? Wuthering Heights meets The Shining. Miss it at your peril.
“A compelling read”
(Hardback)
This is a strangely compelling read: strange because I didn’t like any of the characters but still wanted to know what happened to them. The story moves along at a cracking pace and is very well written, (though not quite Wodehouse standards). I think it would make a great book club choice; providing a lot of points for discussion - how far would you go for someone you loved?
“The Next Secret History?”
(Hardback)
Ok, maybe that's a big pair of boots to fill, but I loved The Kellerby Code. The toxic friend group our lower class protagonist bends over backwards to fit into, the growing resentment of the effortless wealth and success and the inevitable tipping point. I was gripped, and will be pushing it at everybody this year!
“Wonderfully dark”
(Paperback)
A few chapters in and I was hooked.
The story just kept giving and the dynamics between the friends is fascinating. It’s a skill to make the reader like the main character but you do and you forgive him all the way.
Biggest reason to read, it’s different. It’s not a regular cosy crime. Modern and a little twisted. Loved it
