It's just after 5 PM & Kate is running late for an interview for her dream job. She is in luck & makes it there just a few minutes late, & it starts off as a fairly normal interview - even if it is taking place in an enclosed & shuttered glass box in the middle of the office space. As the questions & the interviewer's behaviour start to become more & more strange & concerning, Kate is shocked to find that the rest of the staff have left, & she is alone, thirteen floors up in an almost empty building, with a man she's never met before. Feeling uncomfortable, Kate tries to leave only to find that all the doors are locked & the phones don't work. She realises that the man has a question he needs to know the answer to & he might be willing to kill her to get it. Wow, what a gripping read! It is written via two viewpoints; Kate & Joel, the interviewer, & the chapters are fairly short which adds to the tension. It also means that the reader carries on reading 'just one more chapter'. I see some other reviewers have mentioned that the premise is unrealistic - I agree with that, but it works well for this book. I found Kate easy to sympathise with, & Joel was kept teasingly blank up until the last moments. I would say that I found the ending a little rushed compared to the great build-up, I feel that the momentum was difficult to keep up & resolve the multiple plot strands. I thought it was mostly an electrifying read though, & would definitely check out the author's other books. CW: Violence, kidnapping./confinement, physical & mental torture. Called in to interview for a top job, a woman soon finds herself trapped in an office after hours, unable to escape, while her interviewer demands answers from her that she can't give him. The story becomes a tense escape thriller as she tries to get out of the building or call for help, as well as uncovering what exactly the whole thing is about. At times the story seems a bit unlikely, and the villain only needs a moustache to twirl and a cape to swirl for him to become pure melodrama, but it's action-packed, tense and exciting right up until the end. The Interview is a very clever title for this novel by C M Ewan. Interviews usually evoke a sense of dread and I think the title acts as an exemplar for what may be contained within. In reality, the interview in question is more of a writer’s device to tell a familiar story a slightly different way. Imprisonment, psychological torture, interrogation and physical harm is really what it’s all about and that could have been done in any setting, not necessarily within a deserted office skyscraper, but it was the job opportunity that was the lure for the main character Kate. The interviewer was working for an aircraft manufacturer and wanted to find out what information was known about a particular design defect. It’s in essence a melange of missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320 black box debacle of 1988. In terms of action it’s pretty full on and Kate (the interviewee) does her best to escape from the ‘office’ using any means she can think of. The elevator shaft escape being the most implausible as the human pendulum technique would be impossible for an amateur to pull off. I cannot think why Kate, in an office of electrical appliances, didn’t use a lead to electrify one of metal doors but I suppose many people don’t know their wiring colour codes. All in all a very pacy thriller with some interesting twists but too much introspection for me. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

An addictive thriller that grabs you from the very beginning and doesn’t let up until the last page. Interviews are the stuff of nightmares, so when Kate’s takes an unsettling turn, you are instantly hooked. There is always an undercurrent in interviews as to what do they want to find out about you and what do you want to project, the mind games in this are a good starting point for a thriller. The danger, implied or real, kept my interest and there was always a hook into the next chapter. I raced through this in a few days and really enjoyed the ride.

THE INTERVIEW by C M EWAN. - NO SPOILERS! If you are looking for a thriller of a read, then this is the book for your! From page one, it's a rollercoaster of a ride, with twists and turns everywhere. With characters you can love and hate and shout at. I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced, short chaptered, well written book and would definitely recommend.
