I actually forgot that I had read the first book, The First Wife by SE Reed which I awarded four stars to, so I can attest that this book can be read as a standalone. The prologue draws you in and makes you wonder how the situation has become so intense to the point of two women grappling together and then one of them doesn’t survive. The rest of the book is about what led up to that scenario. Sophie, a rich English woman who desperately needs somewhere to call home meets a seemingly perfect new best friend, Rebecca whose home life is unsatisfactory with an absent husband, two small children and an unrecognised yearning to be a Broadway star. - a perfect mix. The female characters are are very believable while the supporting men are a little bit wishy washy. Is there going to be a third book with these people? I hope so.

The First Widows by S.E. Reed is a twisty psychological thriller that dives into toxic friendship, manipulation, and the secrets hidden beneath seemingly ordinary lives. The relationship between Sophia and Rebecca starts in a way that feels familiar, two women filling gaps in each other’s lives, but it quickly becomes clear that something darker is unfolding. I really enjoyed how the tension builds through small, unsettling details, especially as curiosity turns into something far more dangerous. The domestic setting works well here, making the secrets feel closer and more personal, and the themes of control and hidden truths within relationships are explored effectively.
