Reviews: The Empty Space (1)
“The Empty Space”
(Paperback)
by Ben Keenan at Bury St Edmunds Buttermarket
Peter Brook is a name synonymous with the Theatre. This book, based on a series of lectures he gave at universities during the sixties is one of the most referred to books I have ever come across and has been referenced by authors including Antony Sher, Simon Callow and Ian McKellen and other giants of modern Theatre acting. This book succeeds by sprinkling the pages with lessons learned from Brook's own life spent both on the stage and behind it as director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and numerous other world renowned companies. Brook's writing paints a vivid picture of what it is like to be a professional actor and how even an empty space can be powerful in it's simpliciaty as a bare stage. This is the book which launched a thousand auditions as Brook's words inspire and encourage those hungry enough to dedicate their lives that remarkable business called 'Show'. A classic in every sense of the word.
