Reviews: The Devils (43)
“Another grimdark classic”
(Hardback)
Joe Abercrombie’s The Devils is a genre-blending fantasy that follows a ragtag group of supernatural misfits - a vampire, a werewolf, a necromancer (and others) - on a perilous mission led by an unlucky monk, set in an alternate medieval Europe on the brink of disaster.
Abercrombie’s signature blend of grimdark grit, razor-sharp wit, and relentless action is on full display, delivering a tale that’s as brutal as it is hilarious.
“Going to be the book everyone wished they had bought at the time.”
(Hardback)
This book is absolutely amazing. I have been a fan of Joe's writing for ages and in my opinion this is the best book he has ever written. The 1st of a trilogy, it is rich in character and world building and you immerse yourself in the fantastical and somewhat outlandish world that Joe has created. I loved it so much that ive ended up with 4 totally different signed versions of it that i will never part with.

“Amazing!”
(Hardback)
This was such a fantastic novel! It reads as a standalone (but I will dream of this becoming a series!) and this will delight all the fans of Joe Abercrombie who've been eagerly awaiting a new novel.
As always with Abercrombie, the main draw of this novel is how fabulous the characters are, and how well-realised, as well as the humour woven through the entire novel. Following the 'Devils' (a vampire, a magician, a Viking werewolf, an invisible elf, an immortal soldier, and a woman with considerable experience in, well, everything) as they escort a lowly thief to her new role as Empress of Troy, this was an immersive, incredible novel and I absolutely loved it.
I was very lucky to receive an advanced copy of this (thank you to the publisher!) and I can't wait for this to be released - I think everyone who enjoys epic fantasy will love this!
“Absolutely Brilliant”
(Hardback)
My first time reading Joe Abercrombie and I'm blown away. I picked this ARC as the synopsis sounded amazing and it did not disappoint. As expected the story was brilliant, weaving history and imagination to great effect. There were twists and turns, some of the best fight scenes I've ever read and the characters were so well realised. I absolutely loved getting to know each and every one of them, their truths, their lies and the bonds they forged along their journey. Especially the unexpected liaisons, there were so many laugh out loud moments and also some heart wrenching ones.
The world was beautifully described, both aesthetically and politically. The author brought everything to life in vivid detail.
I'm really hoping that there is a second book in this series, and looking forward to exploring the author's previous work.
“Vigga my beloved”
(Hardback)
Joe Abercrombie has switched things up! The tone of The Devils is something I wasn't sure we'd see from Abercrombie.
I am a big fan of the first law trilogy and so had high expectations for The Devils and I was not disappointed. The humour in The Devil's is fantastic and gave me monty python vibes. The quick back and forth between characters meant I almost always had a smile on my face. That's not to say this book isn't gruesome in fact some descriptions are down right disgusting and its great. It is also gritty the fight scenes are brilliant to me, the banter the gore and the hecticness of it all.
The characters we are introduced to and follow are so well written and the chemistry Abercrombie creates is perfect.
I beg that everyone reads this book I will be reccomending to everyone I possibly can! I need to scream my love of Vigga and the Barons Dumplings.
