Reviews: The Devil's Workshop (6)
“Gloriously gory and fun to read.”
(Paperback)
by Nocturnal bibliophile
Funny, right? Oh yes, very funny despite the gore, of which there is plenty. Jack is back, he of the Ripper fame and notoriety. Having been kept captive after rather foolishly falling asleep after 'transforming' his last known victim (Tut!) he is almost accidentally freed by an escaped convict who stumbles upon him during said escape. So who kept him captive? Why that would be a shadowy secret society of men hell bent on seeing that justice is done to those who kill, rape and generally cause mayhem in fair old Victorian London. The escape itself is very well described and apparently well plotted by the society concerned, The Karstophenomen, with the aim of holding specific escapees in their lair for their punishment. Enter Walter Day and Hammersmith et al. Charged with finding and taking these heinous individuals in to custody they become embroiled in Saucy Jack's revenge. I must say that my heart pounded when Jack mentions popping by to see Mrs Day who is in the throes of labour! Jack's musings are deliciously funny as are his remarks to those he plans to do harm. Should one laugh out loud to a disembowelment? I did, as I am sure you will too considering the victim. So why did Jack plan to visit Mrs Day................ no, that's too much information for future readers of this surprisingly good book. It is infinitely better than the preceding two and leaves the reader wanting much more. Fortunately Mr Grecian has seen fir to leave the ending on somewhat of a cliffhanger, one which promises to be equally as gory and possibly as funny (at least to my warped inner sadist!!), with a reappearance of Jack and so much more of the 'Harvest Man'. Hmn, the Harvest Man, who is he? Hardly touched on in this book he promises to be a truly hideous bad guy! I can't wait!
“A gripping return to form.”
(Paperback)
by Lucy OConnor Walton on Thames
I loved the first in the series but didn't much care for the second. However, this third book is a return to form. It's exciting, clever and packed full of suspense. I think this will appeal to any crime fan as its an atmospheric rollercoaster ride through Victorian London as the murder squad of Scotland Yard race to find a group of escaped criminals. It can be read as a standalone, as previous events are explained when necessary, but it's best to catch up with the first two. Grecian has excelled himself here and set up the story for the next book quite cleverly. Inspector Day is a fantastic detective and a character which readers will be happy to read about again and again. A great series which I hope will continue on for many more books.

“My new favourite”
(Paperback)
by Abbey need
After reading The Yard I felt compelled to read another one of his books and I am very glad that I did. This is yet another compelling read and I would definitely recommend this to a friend. I liked that in this book we are able to meet inspector March of whom we have heard so much about and the idea of Jack the Ripper wondering the streets of London again adds an extra twist to the novel. However out of all of his books I would still say that the Yard is my absolute favourite, even though this is a close contender.
“A ripping tarn”

Definitely the best in the series so far, fast paced with a brilliant plot. Full of twists and some nice concepts, I am already excited to read the next one. Excellent series that is a recommend to anyone who enjoys a good crime novel.
