Reviews: The Devil's Advocate (14)
“A fantastic and extremely important book”
(Hardback)
by Ania Kierczynska
“The Devil’s Advocate” is a new novel in a fantastic Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh. The story starts with a young innocent man waiting for the execution on an electric chair. The prosecutor knows that the guy is not guilty. But he doesn’t care. He wants the kid to fry. Because he’s a serial killer. You read the prolog not believing your eyes, you calm down after the last sentence… then you have another bomb dropped on you in the next chapter. And that’s how it is throughout the book. Another kid is on a trial for a murder he didn’t commit, his lawyer disappeared, the rich and influential prosecutor is getting ready for another death penalty and there’s only one team that can help… Eddie is a lawyer but he used to be a con artist. He’s using skills of both professions to defend innocent people in the court. He has an ex judge Harry with him, together with another lawyer Kate and Bloch who is an ex-cop. They make a perfect team and they’re ready to save a life from the hands of the devil. I loved how the story was shown from different perspectives and that Eddie has people helping with cases. It makes everything more interesting! We have a watertight case with two admissions to guilt, the DNA confirming that it belongs to the defendant and the entire city against him. If that’s not enough, we see a racist county run by white supremacists gaining more power every day. And they can’t wait to blame the black kid for all the evil. And I’ll leave it here to not share any spoilers! Looking at the important content of the story - we know that those things are happening in USA. Not only I had this suspicion, but the author’s note confirmed it. I think that was the most terrifying part, that even though “The Devil’s Advocate” is a fiction, there are 5 prosecutors in USA being responsible for 440 death sentences which makes 15% of all death sentences in the country. My emotions when reading this book were a rollercoaster. I was excited, curious, angry, upset and happy. I almost cried on the mention of the event that made me cried in “Fifty fifty”. I believe that a great book releases different emotions and “The Devil’s Advocate” is very intense! It’s a fantastic and extremely important book. It’s taking Steve’s writing to an entirely new level, it’s not just entertaining but hopefully will open people’s eyes to what’s happening with the radicals. A definite *must read* which you should pre-order now!

Having read all of the books in the Eddie Flynn series I was looking forward to this book for quite a while, but the wait was well worth it. As with the other books there are more twists and turns than a roller coaster. Superbly written ,Steve Cavanagh is one of the finest authors of modern times and I can't wait for the next instalment. Anyone who likes books about crime and law should definitely read Mr Cavanagh's books .

“Absolutely fantastic”

The Devil’s Advocate is the latest book in the Eddie Flynn, Legal Thriller Series and what a book it is. Absolutely brilliantly written, it is fast paced, full of drama and entices a depth of feeling towards the characters, the situation and the surprises that come along. There's no way of guessing which path the story will go down. Eddie is a Defense Lawyer who won’t represent anyone he believes is guilty. When he gets approached to take on a case of a young innocent black man who has been accused of the murder of a white girl in the depths of rural Alabama, he heads down there with his team and takes on Andy's case immediately. Koch is the District Attorney, with the highest number of death penalty executions to his name in the country. Eddie and the team must take on this questionable character, navigating the barriers put in front of them every step of the way, before its too late. I love the way the characters of Eddie, and his team Harry (a retired Judge) Kate (a new lawyer who has proven herself quickly) and Bloch (an ex cop and childhood friend of Kate) bounce off eachother so fantastically. Their relationships are developing wonderfully and make the story even better than it would be anyway. I'm very much hoping that there will be another book in the series so I can follow their stories together. It really enhances the storyline and leaves me smiling. This truly was a book that I didn’t want to put As an aside, this story really reminded me of To Kill A Mocking Bird, in both atmosphere and the horrors of racism that are evident in The Devil’s Advocate,, which evoked memories of how I felt when reading that book years ago. I am going to make sure I re-read it soon as I think it's important in current climes. Thank you so much to Netgalley, Steve Cavanagh and Orion Publishing Group for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
