Reviews: The Dark Wives (37)
“Great series”
(Paperback)
Normally when I read the paperback of the vera books the TV adaptation is still some way off, this time however the dark wives formed the basis of the final TV vera episode. So coming to this book I knew the basic plot which is fine. There are differences between this original book and the adaptation but the main story is still pretty close. The novel is excellent and begins with vera still dealing with holly's death (something which didn't occur in the TV series) and investigating the death of a careworker and the disappearance of chloe, a temporary resident at the children's home. The newest member of the team, rosie is introduced and soon earns her place innthe team. This is another extremely well written and plotted novel from Ann cleeves. The characters are well crafted and the plot intriguing. I know Ann cleeves is talking about ending the vera series soon which will be a shame but the announcement of a new shetland novel is very welcome. It's one I'll be getting in paperback as soon as its released.
“Vera just doesn't disappoint!”
(Hardback)
Vera fans rejoice! This fall, we once again travel into rural Northumbria as our favourite detective as she searches for a vulnerable young woman at the epicentre of a grisly murder outside a care home for young people.
Readers can look forward to favourite characters from previous books (as well as some new friends!), a superb autumnal setting and feel, realistic portrayals of the wonky priorities in social care, education, policing, etc., timely commentary of how austerity and climate breakdown are impacting rural communities, and, of course, a murder mystery to solve!
I anticipate this being a hit with longstanding Vera fans and for readers looking for an atmospheric mystery to enjoy this fall alongside your hot drink of choice and favourite fleece blanket! I genuinely think this book could work as a standalone, but would caution folks to start earlier as you’d be doing the character and story arcs a disservice to jump in here.
Pan Macmillan, you have made my week with this ARC - thank you so much!
“Vera Series”
(Hardback)
Another wonderful addition to the Vera series!
You know whenever you pick up one of Ann's books you are in safe hands.
As always with Vera books I love the settings (NE England).
The characters are wonderful and the plots keep you guessing all the way.
Very happy to recommend The Dark Wives to all.
“Another belting ‘Vera’ read!”
(Hardback)
Another belting ‘Vera’ read from Ann Cleeves. With this series you know you are guaranteed an engaging dark mystery/ crime, some Northern humour / sarcasm, great team spirit and some real caring from the blustery, no nonsense, DI Vera Stanhope.
I loved this book because Vera gets stuck in completely, uncovering all sorts of dirt hiding under stones in this emotional case. It is a real conundrum but she follows her instincts and is supported by her trusty team, (Joe & Charlie) whilst trying hard to get to know her new team member. Seeing Vera’s quirks and habits from a new pair of eyes is fascinating.
The case is an interesting one, throwing up enough social injustices, to rile Vera. Her doggedness and determination are what make her the resounding success she is.
Ann Cleeves’ writing brings the Northumbria countryside to life so vividly that the reader ‘sees’ the scenery clearly. Totally love this series!! Wouldn’t we all want a Vera in our corner in times of trouble?
“A dark and poignant crime mystery set in the North East of England.”
(Hardback)
The story begins with the thoughts of a young girl, a carer for her mother, who suffers from mental health issues; she is currently residing in a children's home after her mother's illness escalated. She's a loner and a writer and harbours a tendre for one of the younger workers at the home. When a dog walker finds a body, Vera and her team arrive and discover a suspicious death and a missing girl. The investigative team with a new member draws the reader into the story with their detailed interviews, research, and cohesive team dynamics. The mystery grows with another deadly twist and a claustrophobic wall of silence. I like the web of lies and secrets created, the story's emotion, especially the poignant lives of the young people involved and the clever and compassionate detective, Vera. It's an absorbing and immersive crime mystery.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
