Reviews: The Catch (28)
“A pleasant rom-com perfect for small-town fans”
(Paperback)
by Raquel Bonelli
This book is perfect for any fans of small-town rom-coms. It has all the elements of a small town, a city girl who goes to this small town and gets there for a week and goes through a rediscovery of self and meets a small-town man (who usually has a very handy job) and helps a business (in this case an inn) that is in trouble. It is the recipe for success, and it is hard not to enjoy that kind of romance. Reading this book, reminded me a lot of Tessa Bailey’s It Happened One Summer, but a little more rom-com, as I thought it was funnier as well as romantic. I’m a huge fan of small-town romance, I love how the story happens in a very limited geographical space with great secondary characters and The Catch had all these mixed with one of my favourite tropes: fake dating. The reason why this book is not 5 stars to me is that I felt like the beginning was a bit too fast, so much was going on with short scenes that I was not connecting with Mel or the story. I was not visualising the story and struggling to swoon about Evan. After 25/30%, when the boating accident happened, I was so into their story, that the pages flew by. I also wish I could have seen Mel interact more with Chrystal and Tara. Maybe because in the previous two books of this series, they were so supportive of each other, I missed having them there throughout the book beyond text messages. Overall, I think it’s another really good book by Amy Lea. I have read all her books by now and she knows how to create fun female characters. I think they are always very enjoyable and entertaining and this one hasn’t disappointed me. It’s a great ending for the Influencers series. Thank you to Netgalley UK and Penguin for sending me this advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
“Chemistry in spades!”
(Paperback)
by Millie at Colchester
Very very cute, I love a good fake dating story and this one had chemistry in spades! I find this one difficult to comprehend in the sense that it was a delicious slow burn, the characters not making any kind of moves until 200 pages in, but it was also kind of insta love because by the end of the book, they've not even known each other for two weeks yet? I feel pretty conflicted about that, but I loved both Mel and Evan and I loved them together - seeing how headstrong they both are made for some really fantastic scenes together. I also loved the small town setting! I just wish that the timeline had been stretched out a lot more so that the connection didn't feel kind of unrealistic. Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
“Another wonderful addition to the series”
(Paperback)
by AlisAdventuresInLiterature
REVIEW cw: grief, anxiety, mention of depression, abandonment issues, adoption, mention of death When a booking error causes fashion influencer Melanie Karlsen to end up in a small town in Nova Scotia, she immediately butts heads with grumpy fisherman Evan Whaler. When Evan takes her out on his boat, disaster strikes, and Mel pretends to be his fiancée, the lies begin to spiral, but soon neither is sure what they were ever lying about. I have loved this series by Amy Lea, and although this one took a little longer to really get into, I absolutely loved Mel and Evan together. One of my favourite book boyfriend types is the big, seemingly-grumpy-but-actually-cinnamon-roll man. Evan is exactly that, and I really loved the little ways he showed how much he cared about Mel and his family. I also loved how open he was with his emotions. I empathised with Mel and her backstory, and I really loved the development of their dynamic, from snarky to sweet (and especially the star-rating banter). There were lots of great supporting characters to enjoy, from catching up with Tara, Crystal, and their significant others, to new additions like the Whaler family, and Mel's brother. I adored Lucy immediately and loved Nana Whaler. And I cackled at Ian, Mel's lovesick neighbour. I'm not a fan of third-act break-ups, but it made sense, and I really loved the resolution. And the epilogue was adorable. Another wonderful addition to the series. Overall Rating: ❤❤❤❤.5 Heat Rating:

“Sort of caught up”
(Paperback)
by Sarah B
3.75 stars (rounded up) There may be slight spoilers within this review, but I’ve tried to keep it as vague as possible. To start, I absolutely loved Exes and O’s. It was my favourite of the series and after reading this one, it still is. I enjoyed the overall story, the descriptions of the scenery is just perfect and I felt like I was there. Sadly, the rest didn’t work for me. There are similarities to other small town fisherman novels out there and I liked Evan, but I didn’t love him. I think that a dual pov would have solved that for me. I did love Mel, she wasn’t irritating and she felt like a friend, which I liked as a reader. I wasn’t keen on the set up or the reason behind the fake dating and felt that there wasn’t much chemistry between them before they got serious. I adored the family. Well written, funny, a great set up, when they were interrupted so many times, it just worked. Great addition. Overall, it was a fun read. There were things I loved and other things that just didn’t add up for me in the long run. I don’t regret reading it at all. Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the Arc in exchange for an honest review.
