The Breadwinner is written simply for young people and is based on true events in Afghanistan since the Taliban arrived.Parvana and her family are torn apart by the Taliban. Her father is arrested and Parvana is the only one who can earn some money for the rest of the family to live on - but she is a girl, so bravely disguises herself as a boy to enable her to walk the streets safely.Written for young people in simple language, this book really gets across the terrible regime imposed by the Taliban. It does not shirk from issues of violence and brutality but is written in a way that informs rather than scandalises.An excellent book, one that could be used to explain things that are happening in this world. I look forward to reading the next two books in the series.
