I loved this book, full of great characters. Takes a little while to get into the language but worth the effort. Can't wait to read more by this author.

Ross uses a small island police force and forensic expert DC Michael "Digger" Digson to build a story that's a beguiling mixture of island secrets, history and maverick policing. Digger is a brilliant character - smart, stoic and intuitive in a way that is utterly unique -, especially against the usual grizzled detective trope.

This is the first of two crime novels featuring Michael "Digger" Dickson, a reluctant homicide detective for whom this impromptu enrolling in the Camaho Island's police force is an opportunity to investigate the disappearance of his mother. There is more to Digson's profession than a stroke of luck though: he has flair, a knack for forensics and understands the social realities that rule people's lives in the Caribbean Island. 'Bone Readers' is a powerfully atmospheric, perfectly formed novel which possesses all the ingredients that make for great, enduring crime fiction. The characters have complexity and soul and the prose sings and lilt just enough to transport the reader, without ever being in the way. The story is spun slowly, at a pace that suits the setting and the heat. I know Jacob Ross is an award-winning poet --- and I would say that he is also a truly amazing prose writer. His is a refreshingly new and original voice in the crime novel genre. Loved it.
